So my parents had some transmission problems. They had the radiator rupture so coolant got into their automatic transmission. My dad thought it would be cheaper to drop the transmission himself and take it into a shop. They gave them the diagnosis and told them it would cost them around $4500 to fix everything. It has been sitting there for about a month or two Since they didn't have the money. I told them to pick it up and I will fix it. Instead I picked up it up from the shop for them. When I talked to the guy he asked if I was there to pick up a transmission for a nissan frontier. I know they use the same transmission, but it seemed kinda fishy to me.

A day later my dad really started looking at it. He had permanent marker markings on it to help him install it back into the car, but now he can't see any. There are some cast numbers and what looks like a vin number on it, but they don't match at all. I am think that he might have swapped out our valve body and tcm into another tansmission and gave us someone elses...

Are the vin #'s supposed to match? Is there any way to make sure I have the right transmission?

I do believe the VINs are supposed to match as long as the transmission wasn't replaced before. Sounds like that transmission shop is a little shady. $4500? Out of their minds.

They are definitely lying thieves. I finally called nissan last week and asked about the vin tags and they told me everything should match. The transmission we got looked all beat up and dirty and belonged in a 2006 nissan xterra, ours is a 07. Called the dude up and asked him where our transmission was. He said it was gone and there was nothing he could do. He also said that if we give him back the transmission that he gave us he would give us back the money that we paid him, which was $400 to diagnose it. He told us "that was the best he could do..." or he could look over all the hard parts for us and make sure it was ok to rebuild.'

I don't trust him. Gonna drag him through court now. What do you guys think I could get from him? Considering that the clutches, steels, and torque converter was gone. We don't have a transmission and if we get another the TCM is gonna have to be programmed for our car. Are we owed a new or used transmission in working order or one of equal value?

That's a nitemare! I don't know what you could get from him honestly. I would sue for the original transmission back or the value of a new unit from the dealer. I hate shady mechanics that play these games.

To the OP... please keep us posted. I'd sure like to hear how the legal action works out against the shady transmission shop.

For anyone else browsing this thread in the future... Nissan has an extended warranty for the "strawberry milkshake" issue.
