So I bought my son a 240 and we have been fixing it up... guy up the street gave his kid 99 Tahoe 4x4 and installed lift kit and mosnter tires...

His kid is driving through the neighborhood and trys to pick up a CD off the passenger floor... truck moves right... hits a curb ...flips...hits a tree... lands in the golf course... Kid is fine...truck is totaled... 27MPH... So ifigure I am about 30k ahead of my neighbor on cost... but how would the 240 have done in this wreck?

Anyone have any experience in this... It has me thinking the 240 may not have been the best first car... we 8 months no tickets or crashes... but he is definetly starting to drive faster...

When a 240 gets into that kind of wreck, you don't even want to think about how to salvage and repair it.

Just be concerned about how well the 240 (S13 in your case) protects the driver and its passenger(s), especially without airbags and with those weird seatbelts. According to http://www.consumerguide.com, S13 240SX gets rather high safety marks.

Also think about the fact that a 240sx is much much lower to the ground. It would be hard to flip a 240sx.

My 240 was my first car, no crashes or tickets or anything!

Some close calls though. :)

240sx's protect the driver pretty well in wrecks, but just make sure he wears his lap belt all the time, just the auto strap isnt sufficient.

I flipped a blazer as well, ok well rolled it on its side. I was going like 5 mph. My 240's have been awsome. I side swiped a fence post in a moronic lapse of sanity. Just kept on driving.

I wrecked the hell out of my first 240, it held me in place with the stock seat-belts (i weighed 270 at the time).

I had only bruises from the seatbelt, but the car was totaled, they wreck nicely, stupid crunch factor thing :(

my 240 did extremely well when i crashed it. in my case i ended going head first into a gaurdrail at about 35mph and the crumple zones did their job and i ended up with just a slight bruise where the seatbelt was. the car was totaled but i was fine physically. cant wait to get another 240 :(

I know the roll protection in the s14 is excellent! Im pretty sure the s13 would be pretty good too. Strong roof =)

Thanks all, this was the type of reassurance I needed... Yeah I feel bad for the guy with Tahoe... The day before the wreck I was telling him if son could make it 6 months without wrecking the truck he would probablly make it a year... if he made it a year he was probablly in the clear...

He let me know yesterday this is all somehow my fault... I jinxed it...

man i dont think people give the stock brakes on a 240 enough credit. ive had some REALLY close calls.. and the only thibg that saved my a$$ was quick thinking and those awesome brakes... workin on the upgrades though ;)

yeah... the 240 has a pretty good crash rating. NHTSA (ntl. highway traffic saftey admin.) crash test results show that in an accident the driver has less than 10% chance of serious injury, passenger is 10%-20%. That's kinda a funky test though cause you dont really know what conditions they were tested in, but I know that my insurance company thinks it's a decently safe car.

Honestly though, whats going to make the difference between crash or not crash, flip or not flip, isnt going to be the characteristics of the car, it's going to be the driving habits of your son.

Well I've done some damage to mine inthe past but my buddy put the KA-T into a concrete divider this week. He's fine, the car is totaled. I'm tracking down a '91 coupe right now to replace it.The engine & drivetrain are fine, I just need a clean body to put it all into. It'll be back soon, faster then ever!

the lift kit and the tires were against him...the extra sidewallon the tires and the lifted center of gravity on an already top heavy vehicle are not good....(sorry...am a vehicle test tech)....best thing to do is make sure your sons suspension is in top working order...get lower sidewall tires (lowers the effect of sidewall rolling in an accident situation)...make sure all the sway bar bushings are there and in good condition...and of course he needs some cool rims and coilovers (hey....I am trying to help this kid get some cool stuff...lol)...seriously...make sure everything is good....and lowering the cars do help......

Hey, I didn't wreck it. Yes it was the one with the funky hood. I'm keeping my custom lights on the next one, but I'll get the hood done right as soon as I get another car.

Yes, that is my wreck...i was just about to link to it. But yes, the 240sx held up incredibly in that wreck. I wore my seat belt and i walked away with minor rib injuries and a sprained wrist, but i was the passenger. My friend suffered only a broken wrist, a cut on his forehead and some bruising from the seatbelt, other than that, nothing serious. The most important thing is that we walked away from it....we walked 7 miles away from it to be exact. ;) Moreover, it allowed me to be here today to type this and to attest to it's capabilities in a crash. Trust me when i tell you, don't worry about your son's safety in the 240, it was designed very well to withstand a crash.

In case you're too lazy, I walked away from this...

I really appreciate eveyone sharing their experiences... I actually had thoughts about getting rid of the 240 yesterday and buying say a Volvo 240.... But the 240sx will stay! The Volk wheels are on wrapped in Yokahama rubber and the Eibach Proline and KYB AGX go on Tuesday afternoon... Father son project... I am telling myself it is all about keeping the center of gravity lower so no flips... The wreck pics are amazing...the car really does seem to take impact well.

We will post pics of the $50 240sx after we install the shocks and springs. I guess the $50.00 is long gone... wheels, shocks, springs, stereo, exhaust, brakes... getting ready to paint... I am still tons of $$$$$$ ahead of the flipped Tahoe neighbor...

hehe, wish my dad was as nurturing of my 240 project. After my crash (which wasn't my fault since i wasn't driving) he won't let me get another one unless i move out of the house. I've worked too hard for my 240 and the $5000 in SR motor/parts sitting in my garage to just let it all go to waste...I'm moving out in December :D

If your really worried about a flipover (which is not likely) you could install a roll bar.
