ok i have to meet with an air force recruiter soon, from what everyone tells me, they will give me alot of BS. Now what should i really come to expect when i meet with him/her?? btw i still have to take the asvab test, so im guessing that would be the first plan of action they would have me do?? ive heard i should get certain things in writing?? im planning on just 4 years in the photography/video field (havent decided yet). i want to leave this upcoming fall, so i want to have everything in order. any info would be appreciated

you should take the asvab after signing papers and going to MAPS...

what you do is based on what you score...they'll give you a job list of the stuff you're most qualified for...

perhaps you should meet with one then post the notes you take. we can better help you like that...and you can take notes in a recruiter's office and we can laugh at you for that...nerd.

When they sit you down to pick your job (way later on since you're just firs tmeeting with the recruiter) but if they don't want to give you the job you want, don't do it. Also, you are allowed to call your recruiter and talk to him about it if you think there's another job you might be interested in or if you'd rather wait it out. I didn't know that the first time so I got pushed into a crappy job, then i reenlisted to get a better one but because of that I can't get any kind of bonus for the job. Basicaly just make sure you cover everything, nothing they give you is free, if they say you can get another $10k, make sure you know EXACTLY what you have to do for that. A lot of times it involves you to stay in longer. Like you get less money from the GI bill if you're only in for 2 years opposed to 4, but they'll advertise with the amount you'd get with 4, so you mgiht be suprised that it's lower when you look at stuff for the final time.

They give you a practice asvab at the station usually. If they think you'll pass and you want to join, they'll have you take it at MEPS when you get your physical. If you're just looking around and might not join or might wait a few months, they'll just take you to meps and you'll take the asvab only. You don't sign anything to take the asvab, I'd suggest taking it before you sign anything and before you really do anything. That way you know what jobs are and aren't available to you.

My recruiter was a PITA.I have a 2 year degree, was going to go in as an E3, certifications, etc, and she would not guarantee me a job in a field I was already trained in and had a ton of experience in. I could have passed the 6 week tech school in under a week. I was going to try to find another recruiter, then I just decided screw it. I'll make it on my own. Now I have my own place and a pretty good job.

Glad I decided not to join too. I wouldn't want to serve under the current president.

Just remember one thing when signing papers..."If it isn't in writing, it's not going to happen"

And yes, you will need to take the ASVAB before you can pick a job and sign your life away.

If I were you, I'd stay away from the military right now. We're spread thin, everyone's deploying like crazy, people are being stop-lossed left and right, and there's no end in sight. I work with air force guys every day, and they're deploying right alongside us for 7 months. Take it from a guy in iraq right now...stay a civilian. The military has nothing to offer you can't get yourself.

Edit: I'm in the Marine reserves, by the way.

as long as you understand that the military atually goes to fight and kill other people go for it. I am getting sick and tired of seeing these stains on T.V. whining about "I can't kill" and "I didn't know what I was signing up for". It's the military, by design no matter what you do for a job it contributes to the death of others. If you can handle that and are willing to accept all that the job entails by all means but if they will not give you an MOS (military occupational specialty) that you want and guarantee it then walk! If you join any branch of the military at this point you WILL be going to war so if you can't make it worth your while then don't do it at all.
