Have to hold key in magic postion to start car

My 96 maxima has a key problem. When I put the key in the ignition and turn to start the car I have to wiggle the key to get it started. It looks like my key is slightly worn down, but I think the ignition is worn also because I can jiggle my key while the car is started.

The car has problems when I pull the key out, the dust shield that slides over the ignition stays open when I pull the key. Which in tern makes the beeping noise when i open the door, even with the key out.

Is this reparable by a locksmith, or do I need to buy a new ignition assembly? and how much cash am I looking at?

If you have another key that isn't worn, make a copy from that one, and try it. You can also spray some Tri-Flo™ into the ignition where the key is suppose to go. Then push the key in and out, and this will get rid of any gunk that may be keeping the dust cover open.

Using the Tri-Flo™, could also clean it too well, and then the car may not start. That magic position may be cleaned away, in which case you would have to replace the ignition.

Ignition from AutoZone is $139.-$141. depending whether or not it's an AT or Manual transmission.

A bad ignition switch can only be trouble later. It might causea short somewhere else or discharge your battery when turnedoff. Pay to have it fixed or dont set off the airbag
