If you have another key that isn't worn, make a copy from that one, and try it. You can also spray some Tri-Flo™ into the ignition where the key is suppose to go. Then push the key in and out, and this will get rid of any gunk that may be keeping the dust cover open.
Using the Tri-Flo™, could also clean it too well, and then the car may not start. That magic position may be cleaned away, in which case you would have to replace the ignition.
Ignition from AutoZone is $139.-$141. depending whether or not it's an AT or Manual transmission.
