advances in technology just for the sake of advancements is just plain stupid.

Meh. I'm still waiting for robot bodies with human minds in them.

One day they'll want rights and we'll have to amend the constitution.

Also, that's the most cliche white female voice I've ever heard.

I hope it turns out like that one episode of Futurama and we can all get robot girlfriends.

That's creepy. I don't have a problem with advancing artificial intelligence, but don't make them look human. I'd be much more comfortable if they looked more like a machine.

As far as actual AI (and let's be clear: voice recognition and preprogrammed adaptable responses are about as far from AI as earth is from the center of the universe), I'm firmly in favor. I envision a future where AI and humanity work together to achieve amazing things. The apocalyptic view of patricidal AI from science fiction has always seemed silly to me.

However, I have NEVER understood humanity's desire to make artificial constructs resemble ourselves. Why does a machine designed to work with people have to look like people? Why can't it look like whatever appearance best suits its purpose? Which is exactly the reason humans look the way they look.

This is particularly weird to me when you consider how much humans interact with animals. People have pet dogs. Pet cats. Horses. Ferrets. Mice. We hunt alongside our dogs. We communicate with animals. Animals are distinctly UN anthropomorphic. It does't hold us back. Their lack of language skills? Yeah, that's a barrier. But that has nothing to do with their appearance, which is never an issue for the humans who work with them. There are some UGLY dog breeds. And people love the s*** out of them regardless.
So why is it that we're so determined to make robots that look and act like us? If it's self-aware and can express itself (language or otherwise) appearance isn't going to be the determining factor in ease of communication.

And, to approach it philosophically, if we're looking to create something new and wonderful, shouldn't we be striving specifically to create something DIFFERENT from ourselves? Why would we want more of the same? Why not add diversity to the universe?

Humanlike robots are stupid.

Sentient robots are awesome.

Looks like they'll be Jenny Cabs and not Johnny Cabs on Mars.

AI is certainly the next and I would argue most significant change in human evolution. It should not be taken lightly and treated like entertainment. Essentially, you are giving birth to a child and it should be treated with all the concern, care and guidance one would a human child. Life with the speed of a computer would evolve very quickly so making sure the trajectory of the evolution is aligned squarely where would like it because once AI starts to develop it will quickly outpace our ability to control it so we better get it right.

As someone who would prefer to live forever the technology will allow that to be possible, I think, at least my consciousness. I prefer my robots cute, but I'm not against them being hot as long as they are, um, "fully functional." :naughty:

I think the answer is pretty simple: fear.
Most people are initially scared and apprehensive of something that doesn't look like themselves, so a robot with AI, that looks nothing like a human being, will scare and intimidate people.
The more it looks like us, the more accepting it would be.
Now I realize that's a generality, and some of us would welcome something that is different from ourselves, but most people need to be in a comfort zone.
If mankind ever meets intelligent extraterrestrial life, and they happen to look like giant spiders or something, what do think the first reaction would be?
We'd probably be shooting at it.
Conversely, if that alien life form is humanoid, we would tend to trust it, even if it turns out that they want to exterminate the planet.
It's human nature.
First impressions matter, even with robots.
