You have the wrong ECU. Where did you buy your motor?

that is dependant on the year of your blacktop motor.

ecu J7 is for the type X motor only. ECU's 61,62,63 E5 and E6 are all just about interchangeable.

I have never run into a J4 ecu. If i had to guess, I would guess that is the 180sx type X 1997-1998 Blacktop SR20DET Automatic ECU

I would try to contact your vendor to try and swap ECU's. They also may be more knowledgeable than I. Quickest way to find out is to swap ecus with a friend if that is available to you.

it will work. It just has a slightly older software version. Ideally you want an #E5 - 1994 to 1996 180SX Blacktop SR20DET, Manual

but any that i listed should do the trick.

#E6 - Jan 1994 to Aug 1996 180sx Blacktop SR20DET, Automatic

as a rule automatic and manual ecu's are interchangeable

Go to http://www.phase2motortrend.com they have directions on how to manually set your timing. Are all of your coil packs good?

I had the same problem, The shop gave me the wrong ecu, Did you get the right ecu yet?

Good luck.
