i have been chasing down a nagging coolent leak for a week. It leaks after medium to hard driving and as it cooling down. Every morning I have a small puddle on the floor. Anyway, today I saw coolent on the block below the water pump so I figure that is my problem, it's weeping around the shaft. Anybody else have this problem?

Yes. It's a common problem. Use a flashlight and a mirror to look up under the pulley - if you see a bit of water, that's it.

How many miles since it was done? They usually go about 80-90k...

Pressure Test coolant system to make sure water pump is the only place your losing fluid! Upper and lower and By-Pass hoses can also contribute to coolant lost!

Car has 104000 and I don't have much history on it. Looks like a water pump for me. I just bought all the belts and a thermostat that I havn't installed yet so for $100.00 I will just replace it to keep from doing all the work again. Thanks everyone

Did mine about a year ago on the '90 at 76k. Don't wait to replace it. It's not a big job and if it truly is going bad a delay can be fatal. See some of Q45tech's posts on this.

I couldn't find anything in my service records indicating that the water pump was replaced, but I can see that that my radiator definitely was. I just had the coolant flushed recently and I'm showing 148,000 on the odometer now. I'm going to change mine as preventative maintenence when I get a chance.

my 1990 is at almost 150 right now, woke up this morning with a pretty bad coolent leak (dried up for the most part) in which a couple drops of oil somehow got in and made a horrible mess.

Car has been fantastic, since purchase nothing really had to be replaced, but ive been driving her pretty hard so I guess thats what i get

Any idea as to why a little oil could have been in there though? Could just be there are some old seals that need to be redone

Now... where can I find a nice price on the pump? $100 sounds good to me!

Replaced pump on my 94Q last year. Vehicle had about 88K on it. Like in your case, the leak was a bit hard to spot as it was intermittant at first. In my car the leak dribbled off some other components to the left(passenger) side. What worked for me was to find a day when the leak was active and then track it down with a flashlight. Replacing the pump was rather straight forward and inexpensive, unlike most Q jobs.

often times what will happen is the oil will sit in the under tray and then mix when the coolant hits it... doesnt always mean oil and coolant are mixing in the engine, obviously.....

If ANYONE ever has ANY suspicions about the water pump, REPLACE IT... It only takes a little while (hour?)... $100 and an hour of easy DIY time is better than needing a new VH45
