Just talked to my son. Car is '96 base coupe, just under 100,000 miles. He tells me when he turns to the right then straightens up the steering wheel is straight. BUT when he turns to the left then straightens up the steering wheel is off center maybe 20 degrees. This issue started earlier this year but with moving him to grad school we didn't get a chance to look into it. Since the issue started we changed the shocks and front upper control arm bushings. The car had been aligned AFTER this issue started.

What would cause the wheel to be straight after turning right but be off centered after turning left

Also in need of speed sensor that goes in the transmission that controls the steering assist. his feels over boosted all the time. So far all I can find is the sensor for the turbo model

To be out that far, I'd think the likely culprits would be a destroyed rack bushing which is shifting positions under steering load, or the U-joint at the rack is loose and jumping splines. Does this happen when he cuts to the lock, or any left turn?

I'll have to ask. I don't think it happens changing lanes but I also don't think it has to be full locked. I wouldn't think it would be jumping splines but the rack bushings being the culprit does make sense.

I also reached out to Z1 for tech help to see if they have any thoughts. I have never experienced this on any other vehicle.

I'm going to see my son over Labor Day weekend so I might be able to take a look.

Steering rack bushings for sure.

Don't count on Z1, IMHO they are a useless company for after purchase support or any tech support for that matter.

Buy a ES kit from Bernie here, for an easier install.

Thanks. Z1 has actually been pretty valuable help in the past
