Ok, I was on the freeway the other day and heard a load knocking, pulled over to the side of the road and its coming from the left side of the engine. I decieded to do the unthinkable and drove home(80 miles). The car did not overheat, as a matter of fact it actually ran cooler than normal(about one quarter of the way up) The needle seemed to kind of bounce a little and fluctuated a little between halfway and quarterway up. Fuel consumption was normal and the car doesnt even really ride rough just the noise really. I didnt take it past about 2200 rpms but after about 1800 rpms the car knocking is joined by a clatter, I was running 91 octane and wasnt driving it hard just cruising at about 75 mph.I checked the Ecu and only came up with a 5-5 code, A search didnt return anything that really fit this bill. Any ideas?

Timing chain guides done ? Usually rod knock makes itself most noticable around 2400RPMs.

If it's coming from lower block or oil pan area probably you've spun a rod bearing. Have you ran a compression check or oil pressure check on your engines because they have a lot of miles on them!

what you may have eexperienced is piston failure caused by continuous detonation progressing to pre-ignition. The ECU system really advances the timing a lot under light loads to maximize economy and knocking is most often encountered under the moderate load conditions you describe. The knock sensors should have adjusted the timing back to stop the knock--but maybe did not have enough adjustment to take the lower fuel octane. I find it hard to accept a rod bearing failure under light cruise conditions.
