I don't think the ZZW30 is a step back from the SW20 at all. Just the evolution of the marque. The SW20 was a great car that suffered early on from poor suspension setup, and was a demamding drive at the limit (lift off oversteer is SCARY). The MR-S is a car along the spirit that drives the BP6 and anything from Blackpool or Colin Chapman's mind: light, useable, nimble, and complete. Damn near anyone can strap into a ZZW30 and be qucik. Sure, no turbo and light on the power side, but that is what made Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda who they are today: little power in a competent chassis. Need I remind you of cars like the S30, TE27, AE86, SA22C and many other before and since that have benefitted from light weight and razor handling (for their respective days). Just cuz you can't make 600hp on a 1ZZFE the same as you can on a 3S-GTE (which is IMHO the BEST 2.0L ever made, being slightly better than the Japanese variants of the 4G63T) does not mean you can discount it as a lesser car.
