Supposedly, this is a new light bulb that is better than the older Silverstars.

You can now get the 9005 and 9006 Silverstars from Amazon for a lot less money (original model number 9005ST and 9006ST) since they are selling the "new" Silverstar Ultras (9005SU and 9060SU) for about $49.95 per pair.

I been using them in the Max for about 9 months now. They're excellent. Most of my driving is done at night, and I've been very happy with them.In fact, the Ultras' illumination is so good I didn't notice I was down one headlight until a friendly police officer pulled me over to let me know.

Thanks! I decided to try a set of the original Silverstars on my wife's Acura, because the price was right (really inexpensive at Amazon for them). Her current headlights are 10 years old now, and getting a little bit dark. Surprising how well they have lasted, though!

I sure hope that the "early" burnout of the Silverstars does not occur (and, yes, I plan to handle them carefully - no fingerprints!) on these. It would be silly to replace something that has lasted 10+ years (albeit fading a bit now) and have the new ones burn out soon!

Does anyone know how these SilverStar Ultras compare to PIAA Xtreme White? I have a set of PIAA Xtreme White on my S14 right now. I love them. But they're so expensive. If the Silver Star Ultra is comparable, then I would probably switch over the next time I need to. (Keeping fingers crossed that that time wouldn't come soon)

At 55W draw, I don't think any halogen light puts out more lumens, except maybe the Ultra.

I've tried the regular Silver Stars and the Ultras... and like HIR's the best. The SS's definitely have a nice white light but I found when driving in rainy conditions they tend to lack a bit. The HIR's are actually much brighter and can be modified to fit in 9005 and 9006 housings. They are expensive though and aren't quite as white as the SS's but are much better in the rain and the dry. The only thing I'm unsure of so far is longevity since the filament burns a little hotter (they burn hotter due to the infrared reflective coating, which reflects heat back to the filament to burn hotter and thus brighter. The coating is not put on the top of the bulb so the light will go through unobstructed. The bulbs have the standard 55/65 watt rating of the 9006/9005 bulbs respectively).

Brightness wise... the low beams have a higher lumen rating than the Silver Star high beams and so far in my Z and M30 have not caused any additional glare.

It is technically an "off-road" modification as you aren't supposed to put a bulb in brighter than what the housing was designed for or something along those lines... but, unlike those hid "kits" floating around everywhere, you aren't likely to have any trouble from the police, especially not having an extreme white/blue look to it.
