has anyone taken the muffler or exhaust off of a 350Z, if so how did it sound or would sound? what would the HP gain be approx.? just curious to see which route to take because $1000 for an exhaust is a lot of money.

I unbotled the muffler shortly after purchasing my 06 base model Z. I loosened the bolts, took the pipes apart and slid 3 washers onto each bolt and then put it all back together and botled it tight. It is much louder than stock and there is a slight drone at highway speeds but I doubt anyone interested in this is going to care about noise, isn't noise the whole point? I think it sound pretty good, maybe a tad bit raspy but over all very nice especially since it's pretty much a free mod. The high end definately sounds good, much more intimidating. As far as power, I don't think you'll see anything much at all in the way of gains. Maybe slightly better throttle response but that's it, and that might just be me. But try it, there's nothing to loose and you can always bolt it back to stock.

Doubtful you'll gain any HP and it will sound awful. The factory exhaust is pretty well tuned, extracting power from it is not as easy as simply opening up the piping. The companies that are making the most power with their exhaust put a lot of thought into them and some went through many designs. Some exhausts out there lose power.

The stock exhaust sounds great to me. If you're actually looking for more power, go with a good exhaust system. Otherwise, I'd leave it alone.

Exactly. Anyone who says or believes otherwise is foolish and misinformed.

you might gain a couple of peak hp but you'll loose power lown low, and there is a reason aftermarket kits for the Z33 cost so much, when Nissan built the Z they spent a lot of time and money getting the right combination of sound, flow and power, the result is that many of the early aftermarket kits actually reduced hp! there are many more kits available today and most of them will get you a few hp but not much as nissan did a pretty good job of it the first time around

I might try a mid pipe and headers for the time being.
