Has ANYONE put a 5.5 gen 4at in their 5th gen? (I'd like to do this)

I'd HAVE to assume that SOMEONE out there has had to put an '02-'03 4at in their '00-'01...

I've found a couple transmissions for my ailing GXE:

One is an '00 unit that is $350 and requires a 580 mile round trip to pick it up.

One is an '02 unit that is probably also $350, and requires a 600 mile round trip to pick it up.

... And lastly, there's an '01 Infiniti i30t 4at with LSD for $500... I'd have to pull some strings to get it shipped to me in NY from Arizona.

...

I'm in touch with the guy about the '00 unit, and am also in contact with the guy about the '02 4at.

The '00 unit.... it'll of course slide in real easy. It has kinda high miles though.

The at has only 40-something k. Possible problems (I need some feedback, guys:

- '02 has different speed sensors.

'00:

'02:

How could this be problematic with regards to wiring/installing? ...and furthermore, aren't there more than one of these to install?

- The '02 has a different transmission mount part number.

'00:

'02:

- Driveshafts, control solenoids and rebuild kits are the same between '00 and '02.

.... So, is it looking like swapping to a 5.5 gen 4at might be un-doable or troublesome? Does anyone know of such a swap having been done successfully?

Hopefully I'll have this figured out by the weekend, as I think I'll make the drive to retrieve whatever transmission I choose on Sunday, Dec 21.

Writing this post made my head hurt a lot. Sorry if it hurts yours to read it. I'll disclaim any potential errors by the fact that I'm tired. I'm going to go eat something now.

Physically, the swap should work based on the info you have here.

It all comes down to whether ECU, TCU, and VSS (speed sensor) can be made to play well together. The 5th gen ECU and 5.5 gen ECU are obviously different. But are the 5.5 gen and 5th gen TCUs different? That should be an easy enough question to answer using part numbers or just a call to a dealer (or both).

Then comes the speed sensor issue. You need to know whether the new speed sensor on the new trans will produce an output pulse signal that matches the one produced by the old sensor on the old trans. If so, you're fine. You can splice the connector for the new sensor onto the old harness and you'll be good to go. If output is NOT the same, though, it could cause a wide range of problems.

You HAVE TO HAVE the correct speed sensor signal for a number of things (correct transmission operation among them). Even so, the two signals are kind of buffered from each other thanks to the way the VSS signal works. It goes from the VSS to the gauge cluster and is then converted to a voltage signal that goes to the ECU and on to the TCU. BUT if the VSS pulse rate is wrong, the cluster will read the wrong speed and so will everything else.

One question that could answer all of that VSS complexity for us, though, is whether the gauge clusters are the same in 5th gen and 5.5 gen. I think they are...but I've never compared them. If the clusters are the same, the VSS output HAS to be compatible.

So if the new speed sensor works with the existing car, your only issue is whether you need a 5.5 gen TCU or not, and whether that TCU will like your 5th gen ECU.
