I have the head off of my S14 SR right now to install a new head gasket and head studs. While it was off I was thinking about porting it. I looked around on here and didnt really find a solid answer. I might be planning on going to a higher flowing intake manifold. It only makes sense to me that if you spend the money on a new manifold that flows well to also make the head itself flow as well as the mani. I have a fair amount of experience with porting, mostly on small engines though.

Really I guess what my biggest question is is how many m.m. can I get away with before interfering with water and oil passages. I'm not thinking about hogging out the ports to resemble something found on a top fuel dragster, mainly just smoothing and polishing though.

I know what you all are going to say, dont bother or mess with it because you are just going to screw things up. But this is one of those things that I take pride in trying to do myself and to me its what having a project car is all about.

Anyway if anybody with some experience in this matter could lend some insight it would be greatly appreciated.

I ported and polished mine myself. It's not too hard if you know where to take the materail off of and how far you can go before you break into a water jacket. Messy as hell though, and you have to make sure you clean it very thoroughly when you're done to prevent aluminum bits going through the rest of your engine. Also, a good set of tools (rotorary tool w/ speed adjuster, carbide bits for aluminum, sand rolls, lubrication, and cross buffs) can add up fast.

I had my intake and exhaust ports done also had the compression chambers polished. There wasnt much too remove from the ports. Most of it was smoothing out the lumpy section where the bend in the ports is. Then was polished as far down as he could get by hand. He used the gaskets to Port Match. My total was $550 but that was the P&P, Decking the Head, Valve Job, and Install of Springs/Retainers.
