When the Rogue is in drive and on a steep incline (or not so steep) it will roll backwards. Other auto transmissions I have had will adjust the clutch to keep the car from rolling back. With the Rogue, you must keep the breaks applied or you will roll backwards. I was wondering why Nissan would have the Rogue behave in this way.

I've been on some steep inclines and I don't seem to have that problem. If I let go of the break while I'm stopped on a hill the Rogue doesn't move forwards or back.

I had this issue on my 98 ponti trans sport 'till junk yard bought it from me. On this car if it happens it doesn't roll back for a long distance. This is not a manual transmission so the car doesn't really roll back. Sometimes it does for a sec and then stops. Not a big deal for me.

I've had numerous cars that did this. My dad always told me this was not good for the transmission, and not to do it. He said " Keep your foot on the brake when you are stopped, it's easier to replace the brakes than the transmission".

Father knows best, right?

Letting the vehicle roll back gently while in D should not harm the transmission. The CVT like every automatic transmission has a torque converter that allows some 'slip' while the engine is idling.

Rapidly changing between D<>R, not stopping fully while switching between D<>R, or revving the engine while shifting into D or R could cause significant shock to the transmission and possibly damage it.

Speaking of sayings... there is an old adage with manual transmissions that is similar to the one you mention. It still holds true today:

Don't slip the clutch at a stop light to keep the vehicle stationary, put it in neutral and use the brakes instead. It's much cheaper to replace brake pads than a clutch!
