Has anyone Locked their key in the car?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I thought this was impossible but my wife did it. She put the key fob in the ashtray and somehow managed to lock the car, 2008 EX35, with the key in there. I tried to recreate this but the car would not let me lock the keys inside. Tried using the lock button inside, outside, passenger and driver's side... Any ideas how this could have happened? :gotme

Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am going to try to replicate but I thought it was impossible as well... but here goes one theory (not sure if its a good one lol)... she locked the doors while in the car... and opened her door by just pulling on the door handle from the inside... this only opens the driver side door then she manually flipped the lock back while the door was open and locked the door?

I think it's possible if you have two keys at the same time with you. If I remember right, I've done something like that accidentally.

Happened to the sister in law in a Lexus. Left the key in her purse, and the purse in the trunk after she had locked the 4 doors. However, this is a new one (ashtray). The key fog was left inside the cabin... Let us know if you can replicate this because if it is possible, I just know my wife will find a way to have this happen to her. If I can prevent it, the better.

Happened to my Son not long ago. Totally different car but it did have keyless ignition. And there was no 2nd key fob around because I was in possession of it. Kind of worries me.

That really shouldn't be possible.

There are several modes the BCM goes through from the time you hit the Start button to shut the engine off and the time you initiate the lock mode using the lock button on the remote or door handle request button. One of these steps involves pinging the interior for key fobs. I would wager a guess that the battery was fairly discharged, or something was inhibiting the signal. It could have been an error. I would start by replacing the remote battery.

Infinitis tend to use no less than 8 sensors to be able to locate any keys in and around the car. A good test of the batteries strength is to give a rough test of the proximity sensor using the Ambient walkup lighting feature. The max detection range is 1 meter. If you get almost to the car before the lights come on you know your signal is getting weak. This also works when using the remote but I think the detection range is more like 10 meters.

Do you mean that when I approach my infiniti something should happen (lights etc)? I never noticed - I am new to the EX (1+month of ownership of a EX Premium+Navi+Tech packages). I've noticed that the lights under the side mirrors turn on but only when I press the unlock button on the key fob, or when I open the side door (with the handle)... Is there a setting I need to change to the car to have the light turning on?

Thanks

There are welcome lights that come on when you approach. This feature is deactivated after 14 days of inactivity to preserve that battery life.

It is a fairly straight forward reset.

Good Luck and congratulations on the new EX.
