Has Anyone Had This Problem?

I've had my Versa for just over 2 months and have loved it. However, this morning I was not impressed when the engine light came on and the car would not drive faster than 20 KM. I drove it immediately to the dealership with my 4 way flashers on. Apparently when there is a problem that could damage the engine the light comes on and stops the car from going any faster than 20 KM. Their computer check indicated a problem with the throttle. They checked the throttle and it was fine. They cleaned off some throttle connecters and it began to work fine. They do not know what was definitely wrong but suspect it had something to do with the cold weather. So, whether it was actually cleaning the connection that helped or having the car in a warm building for 1 hour that fixed the problem they do not know. If it was the cold weather causing the problem I'll not be happy. I live where it is cold 5 nonths of the year and I bought a new car to make sure I had a reliable vehicle. Has anyone else had this happen?

I took the limping Versa to Crown Nissan where I purchased it. I was in on Saturday again and was told that another Versa came in after mine with the engine light on. They believe that we had the same problem even though hers did not go into limp mode. They now believe that the IPDM sensor is defective and plan to replace it. I sure hope that fixes whatever caused my car not to go more than 20 km/hr.

as a matter of fact.. one of the lights is on.. the one that has an excalmation mark in the paranthesis. i thought it was because i needed to change the oil. which i did and it went away for like a day. but before the oil change i noticed my back tire real low and asked them to check it.. they told me it had a very small nail but they couldnt fix it there at nissan. like i said. the light went away for like a day and now its back again.. i assumed i might be because of the tire pressure... what do u all think?

Well caramilk the check engine light just came on in my Versa. I don't have the 20 km [yet.] I'll run it up to the dealer next saturday and show them this thread. I've had mine a little over 4 months @ 2300 km.

I've had my Versa just under 6 months and this has happened to me twice. The first time, I assumed the engine overheated as I had the car where it shouldn't have been (meaning a steep winding dirt road) but I never got the engine light.

Well, it happened again yesterday. It wouldn't start after sitting for 1 hour in moderate weather. When I finally got it to start, it proceeded to stall on me in traffic. I pulled over to let it "cool down" and went home. It's at the dealership now.

The dealer said they have gotten several codes from the diagnostic machine and they are talking to Nissan about what the problem could be. I'm in a very uncomfortable GM rental car, so I hope whatever it turns out to be is easily fixed.

As for the 20km/hr limt, it happened to me too. Buried in the owners manual is the fact that in the event of any engine failure, the speed/rpm limit kicks in as a safety feature. If you pull over and stop the engine (which the manual says not to do if the car is, in fact, overheating) that feature will reset and you'll be able to drive at a normal speed again. It's what I had to do yesterday as I had to get on a freeway to get home!

I'll let you know what the dealer says. I'm very curious if many others have this problem and what it turns out to be!

Just for the record, for the past month it has been VERY cold in Winnipeg, MB (where the OP lives). When he was having problems we had a week of -40C, which is -40F. Well this past week it dropped to -53C overnight with the wind chill, which is -63F... And no that is not a typo! My poor Versa worked fine the next morning, though it was sluggish for the first couple of minutes.

Did you ever get a flashing or solid red light on the dash?

Me? No, I haven't had any flashing light. The only light I got was the blue "cold engine" one. You'd think after -53C I would have gotten something, but not yet.

Well so far so good, no lights, nor any MAJOR mechanical problems other than my rear hatch not locking down. -40c or -40f is damn cold. I plug, it in everyday, the car starts up smoothly.... no problem, wheoooo. BUT the MPG is ridiculous, I got 400km on 48 liters 5 days ago and filled up today I got 380km on 47.5 liters that equals to $$$ out the tail pipe I got 780 KM to date, I rarely use the air conditioner if it turns on with the defrost I shut it off. I guess I must give it time to break in and see what happens after the cold snap goes away, otherwise I'm very happy with the performance. But diaasapointed with the MPG!!

Another user had this problem. For some reason the lock was freezing in the cold. They had to take it in to get "unfrozen".

They changed my IPDM sensor 1 1/2 weeks ago hoping that this would solve my problem. Unfortunately it didn't as it happened again today.

It took me almost 10 minutes to get my car started after work and even when it started it was a struggle. It was as if the gas wasn't getting to the engine. Finally it started and let it run for ten but the engine let was on.

It's now at the dealership once again with everyone puzzled about the cause of the problem. In my 35 years of owning cars I've never had one as problematic as this Versa has been.

Sorry to hear that Cathy - that's a pain. Reminds me of a Chevette I had back in the 80's.

Me mom loves me V but I'm now hesitant to recommend she get one based on some of the problems I've been reading on this forum. Mine's been ok so far (touch wood) but I do think the mileage is below expectations.

Think I'll steer mom more towards Toyota & Honda.

I felt the same way until finally I took the Nissan Service Department Manager's advice and "GOOGLED" the other cars I was going to trade for. You think the stuff here is bad....you should see the Honda Accord threads out there.

Point is....this is a first year car. YES! I've had problems, and, until recently, I've had problems getting them fixed.

Is this the best car out there? No....I didn't want the best....I wanted something CHEAP that I could run into the ground driving 120 miles per day.

So, if you don't want 1st Year Problems...then wait a while. I've had my Versa since August and the number of "Complaints" keeps getting smaller and smaller. That sounds like improvement to me.

Granted that this is a new car and this is one of the risk you run by buying the first model year. But then again Tiida, which is virtually the exact same car, existed for 2 1/2 years before the V came out. There's very few differences and most of the major bugs should have been worked out by now. The first model year issue would be more related to the Caliber than the V. I don't think the V is a POS by a long shot. Complaints are pretty sporadic and seem to be one off issues. The largest issue so far, which has been corrected, was the TPMS issue and the brake fluid reservoir cap warning.

The motor's different we get the more thirsty Renault Scenic 1.8. I read Tiida has 1.5 and maybe another smaller choice...
