Has anyone had the VTC solenoids replaced?

Well, let me ask the dumb question, how do you know they are bad?

Loud ticking and occational knocking. My J30 had a very bad maint. record (previous owner changed oil every 45k miles... but... not evey 90 days. the longest being a year with no oil cgange)

I am not an expert with the VG30DE by any means, but that seems insufficient eveidnce for that diagnosis. I wouild suspect rings, bearings, valve guides, timing belt, camshaft followers first.

Timing belt. How does a timing belt cause engine knocking and ticking?

If it jumps a cog because it is beyond it's service life.

Have you checked all of your accessory drive belts and tensioner pulleys?

VTC solenoids Common on J30 along with problems with CAS noise and total failure when rigorous oil changes don't occur.
