It's counter-intuitive, but I find the faster I speak, the better the voice recognition. If I try to speak slowly and distinctly, then I start getting extra numbers and weird words. Best I can tell, if the speech is too slow and punctuated, the VR starts interpreting single syllables as whole words and does its best to match known words and phrases to them. So "eighty" spoken too slowly is interpreted as "eighty-three" or whatever. Likewise I suspect that any pause in speech, even for an instant, leads it to stop listening and start interpreting even if I keep talking. Background noise also makes a huge difference. The VR mutes the air conditioning and radio so it can hear better - I find an open sunroof bothers it, and an open door often totally confuses it. Likewise, talking to it even from the distance of the passenger seat seems to drop its accuracy. It wants the car sealed and the voice very loud and very fast and immediately after, but not before or during the beep.
