I've raced a black 540i (mid-late 90's) on I-17 northbound from 55mph up. It hung pretty well - throttle response was quicker at the punch, but th Q started pulling away (slowly) around 85 mph.

By 135 the nose of the 540 was four feet back of my rear bumper.

I'm guessing an auto based on the sound at the punch.

The reason I ask is because I participated in a BMW drive program yesterday, they let you register then go on a 12 mile trip to beat I mean drive the cars, It was a pretty good time, I hated the 325 coupe, the 330CI was a much nicer car although I still wouldnt purchase one, the 745 has too many bells and whistles, it takes 12 minutes to adjust the seat, then another 3 to start the car and dont even get me going about the I-Drive, once underway however it was a very nice ride, the transmission wandered a bit too much and was not sure what gear it needed to be in, the car is a (and im comparing this to the Q) a slight stone from a say 5-10 mile per hour roll, the bottom end grunt was not present, however after 100 mph the car rocked, even though all the mags say its a drivers car it really isnt, the 540I sport wagon on the other hand was a freakin blast, this thing was ready to go no matter what speed you were at, the transmission shifted awesome the brakes stopped amazingly and the engine reved nicely right up to redline, from a dead stop and a slow speed roll it got the best of the 745 with no problem, the 745 would run it down but at such a high speed that it didnt even matter at that point, the fact that this was a wagon was even better, from driving the car then getting in the Q I thought that the Q would maybe get it around say 100 mph but wouldnt be by much and that if the Q wasnt in tip top shape then you probably wouldnt want to try it, any way thanks for the replys, by the way the wagon puts out 290 HP and 324 ft lbs of tq.

I LOVE the 5-series wagon... There's one at a dealership here in Phoenix that makes me drool. One of my top 5 favorite cars ever built... Wish i could afford it. :(

Im telling you guys the car was just awesome, if you can find out when BMW is coming to one of the dealerships you guys might have in your area register and go for it, what a blast to be able to drive at least 3/4 of the line up, only thing missing was the Mcars, they even had a 760 but it was broke, but once again I gotta say the sportwagon was my favorite ride, especcialy with the 17s on it and the cool door sill plates, one thing I did notice was the location of the airboxes, they were at the rear of the hood right up against the cowl, they were actually functional as they were ventd to grab cool air from that area, what a nice idea, oh yeah chevy did it the late 60s, see that we americans do have good ideas when it comes to the auto industry.
