Has anyone dealt with the digital speedometer with HUD in an s13?

I have an '89 xe with the factory digital speedometer and HUD. For a while now the speedomer and HUD will flash on and off for the first few minutes after the car is started and then there will be nothing. The auto electric shop I took the car to said it's the speedometer unit that needs to be replaced. They seem unsure and I was curious if it's the whole unit or just the printed circuit board? I can get just the circuit board for $50 or the entire unit for $250. I don't mind spending the money, but don't want to change unnecessary parts. If anyone has dealt with this problem, I would appreicate your help.

Hey, I have seen many many posts like yours...all u need to do is just search ... there's a flashing red button up at the top, it will save u a lot of time (you wont have to wait for replies on the forum) just type in HUD or HUD broken... if nothign comes up, just try re wording it...
