In some of the Q45techs posts I got from Brian (Maxnix). Q45tech says that the best engine is a 1994-1996 VH45DE block with 1990-1992 Q45 heads is the best of both worlds because of the better intake in the 1994-1996 VH and the soduim filled valves in the 1990-1992 Q45.

So if any one has done this are there any power gains?

All the 94-95 heads do is SMOOTH out the minor torque undulations from 4800-5500 rpm and reduce cold and sudden throttle close emissions not sure they have much effect on peak or average power.

Fix whatever year engine you have is always the most economical method. To me the purity of design of the 90-93 is better unless you live in a rigorus emission state where they cut you less slack as vehicles age. Most of that depends on the chemistry inside the various years precats and cats.

I was reading some of the posts Brian AKA Maxnix sent me from the old Yahoo board. And I found this but I may have taken it out of context:
Q45tech wrote:Difference 91 vs. 94 engine - The crank angle sensor/harness and the lower intake runner and head opening are a single oval vs. 2 round holes [90-93]plus some vacuum hose routing but the block/internals are the same. If you changed the ECU and added a few wires [EGR temp sensor]you could probably make a 94 work in a 90-93. Personally I would take the 94 block and use earlier head.

All 90-96 Vh45de are now soo outdated, it really doesnt matter- after spending a week driving a brand new G37 V6 with 7 speed auto transmission this becomes VERY obvious.......the new v6 clobbers the old v8 from idle to 7500rpm redline......power everywhere in the rev range{no holes at various speeds/gears like the q has} and with the 7 speed transmission highway rpms at 80mph are almost identical to the old Q{2500-2600 rpm at 80mph}

With the AWD, you can punch the accelerator to the floor on a WET road and obtain full acceleration without a hint of wheelspin or traction control killing power from a standstill{stoplight}.....amazing. Cruising at 80 mph and flooring the accelerator and 100mph comes almost instantly......0-60 in 5.3, quarter mile in 13.7..........No Q ever came near these levels of performance

You couldn't be more right but the G and the Q are really different machines with a different purpose. I bet the G couldn't Idle as smooth as VH, or...well that's the only thing i can think of right now.

The reason I love the Q is because every time I get in it I feel like I am at home (Some would argue that I treat my Q like my room), And I can't imagine driving any other car than a 90-93 Q45.

I would like to drive a 1994-1996 Q45 for a week and see whats that's like. I drove bgerner12 beautiful 1995 Q45a and that was an honor to drive.

Base price of 2009 G37 Coupe with AWD is $38,700. Price of my 94 Q45 with 23,000 miles was $6000. List price of 18" wheel for the G37 is $1650. I paid $600 for a set of 18" g35 wheel with 225/45/R18 W rated tires. Having money left over to buy presents for the wife; priceless.

What would be ideal is to develop a method of using the 7 speed of a 90-95 Q45 since the 0.77 [7th gear] would roughty match the 0.694 [4th gear of the 4 speed] much better than 0.84 of 5 speed AT.

Ideally one might fit the 3.13 diff gear to be spot on

Talking about spinning the tires when 1st gear shifts at <25 mph.

Lots of problems with starter being on otherside, interfacing 7AT to somekind of controller creating a speed signal for ecu and dash, steering.

Probably easier than converting a Q45 to a manual transmission, clutch, pedals etc.

When wrecks become more common worth looking into

Have to disagree, my 93 Q45 is much faster with 94Q wheels tires@35PSI... 0-60 in 5.3? i dunno, seems like it and faster than a 350Z/Evo7.

Also just as fast as a Charger SRT8 above 100MPH.

Stock!

I'd like to verify this--that my Q45 is the fastest. I'm not living in Sacramento anymore so if anyone is around the East Bay Area lets take a looksy.

yeah a Q45 is not going to be faster than a G35..

I wouldnt really say the engine itself is outdated, it uses all the same stuff that engines of it size use, except maybe for direct injection and what not.

With ECU, 330-340HP that a VH45 can put out is not far off at all what other 4.5L engines are putting out.. Big thing that sets the Q apart is that its heavier than many cars of its size today and the 4 speed AT...

If you catch the Q in the right place at the right time, its fast, but those with 5/6/7 speed transmission have the advantage overall!
