Has Anyone Bought the Infiniti Extended Warranty?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hey Everyone,

As someone brand new to the Infiniti brand, just wondered what the collective opinion might be on the value of upgrading the Canadian 4 year, 100K km bumper-to-bumper warranty to 6 years (same mileage).

I had my previous vehicle 7.5 years and only drove it 100,800 km so I'm pretty safe, distance-wise.

Has anyone purchased this already? If so, what did you pay? (I was quoted $1650 by one dealer and $1600 by another.)

I guess it comes down to the quality of design, materials and workmanship in the EX. Will it start to break down in the 4 to 6 year window or not? Any long-time Infiniti owners have an opinion? What about the plethora of "gadgets" ... will they be prone to malfunction and be expensive to correct?

Thanks!David

I bought one for my 05 Corvette which has a very lack luster repair history and sold the car never using it. I bought one for my 02 Lexus IS300 and sold the car never using it. I bought one for my wifes current 03 Accord and we have never used it. I didn't by one for my 04 Odyssey and I have never needed it. I have spent a lot of money on these packages and never realized any benefit. I am going to leave my money in the bank from now on.

<LOL> So, you had an 02 IS300, you still have an 03 Accord and 04 Odyssey (?) and had an 05 Corvette which is now history ... maybe you haven't kept a car long enough to need extended warranty?!? Just kidding ... thanks so much for the input!

One thing I was wondering, is if this extended warranty gives you access to free (or reduced cost) firmware upgrades and/or nav map updates. If it does, that might well be worth it.

Anyone with more info and opinions appreciated!

Cheers,David

I've confirmed that neither the normal nor extended warranty includes NAV updates (I believe I posted this in another thread). As for firmware, that's likely a grey area.

So, given the reports of sunroof and main seal oil leaks, does this change anyone's mind about buying the extended Infiniti warranty?

If you don't mind me asking, at what cost?

TIA,David

I got the 100,000 mile extended warranty.

I learned my lesson with my prior vehicle - I had a 2004 Murano from new, did not get the extended warranty, and ok, I put 125,000 miles on it in 3.5 years, but there was no excuse for all the repairs that were needed on it, which included:Catalytic converter (roughly $1000)Transmission control valve ($1700)Fan belts replaced ($250)Wheel bearings ($400 x 3 times)Tire pressure sensor ($270)Transfer case (broke 1,000 miles before standard warranty expired luckily)Nav unit needed replacing (again, just before standard warranty expired)Stereo head unit was replaced twice (just before warranty expired)

I also paid for the service plan, which I think was $800 and covers all recommended services and oil changes. I also got the paint chips, windshield, wheels and tires warranty thing too, which was like $400ish.

Hopefully this car shouldn't now cost much more to run over the next 4 years!

Keep in mind that this "extended warranty" decision does NOT have to be made at the time you purchase your car. The dealer can (and will) sell you an extended FACTORY warranty anytime up until your normal warranty expires. I confirmed this with an Infiniti general manager and the service manager. So, if I decide to keep my EX past the factory warranty date/mileage limits, I will purchase a waranty just prior to expiration.

Also, these warranties are marked up "about 100%" meaning your $1800 warranty costs the dealer around $900 or maybe $1K. Now, you will not get one for the dealer cost, but there is room to "negotiate" a better price. a few hundred off is considered a great deal, I understand. Some dealers won't budge at all -- shop around. Any Infiniti or (I believe) Nissan dealer can sell you an extended waranty.
