Has anyone actually had a coilpack randomly go bad?

Just curious, I'm not sure if this is a myth or not. I'd really like to find something else wrong than buying a set of 4 new coilpacks, but if you guys have had coilpacks go bad on you then it's just what i'll have to do.

yes. I was having a misfire issue for a while (I think it was a sketchy coil pack) because after a month or so one just up and died on me. Not fun, you are now running on 3 cyl. Plus they are a nightmare to source.

I heard somewhere that heat does them in but I cant confirm, my engine gets hot like a mother, but I guess thats just what aluminum does

Yes, just recently I was stumped on this very issue. I had a coilpack go bad and it took a high performance shop a couple days to figure out the problem. My car was studdering under boost and I spent lots of time and money trying to fix it on my own.

I guess I should rephrase. My coil pack harness went bad, not the coilpacks themselves. If he falls through on the coilpacks I have a set as well.

Ok came across this thread and I have a few Questions. The studdering im experiencing in my car is around 4k rpm and levels out after you give it more gas. Just wanted to make sure the symptoms you guys were experiencing where the same so I could figure it out without changing EVERYTHING.

This was my exact same problem as what you decribed. I changed out over a few hundred dollars worth of parts before I got fed up and dropped it off at a shop. It took the shop over a day to isolate the problem. The coilpack costed me less then $30 dollars shipped. I recommend just buying one coilpack instead of the whole set because more then likely all four aren't bad. It might be a little more time consuming with one coilpack, but it will save you some loot at the end of the day. This is more then likely your problem. Good luck.
