Is it suppose to be really harsh when changing from D to R and vice versa, P to R/D and vice versa? car already had a transmission fluid change.

No. I have no such issues in my '07. I'd take it to Infiniti for a checkup under warranty.

It may be worth the expense to have it looked at as it may be some adjustment or "cheap" part that could help you avoid a costly transmission replacement.

Went to a nearby shop and they looked at my car for a transmission problem and came back with it having harsh D and R engagement. When putting it in D it would be really harsh and same with R. What can be causing this problem? I have transmission warranty but for only $2900 total. Was told it could be electrical which isn't covered and should be roughly $500-$600.

Does it happen when you first start up? If the previous owner did any modifications to the transmission (shift kit), that can cause a harsh engagement.

It happens all the time. Not sure if there was any mods done but I doubt it.

It could also be an issue whether or not you let your car warm up or not. If you start it up and throw it into R you are going to get a rough shift.

When you start your car it's going to be at about 1,100 RPM (maybe 1,200 RPM), therefore putting your car into gear at that RPM is going to cause that hard gear change.

Let the car idle down to about 900 RPM and try going from P to R. If you results don't change, then I believe a trip to the dealership is in order.

It does it all the time even when the car is hot. Was told its either transmission or electrical, kind of hoping it needs a new transmission but warranty only covers up to $2900 including labor. How much would it cost for a new, used, rebuilt transmission including labor?
