I don't know if this is true or not but lately I've been hearing that if you put underdrive pulleys on a KA24DE the harmonic balancers will be thrown off and will cause the shakes. Is this true?Thanx....

WAIT!!!!Isn't this the TURBO forum??? :rolleyes

Anywayz, I think the balancer is on the pulley itself, removing the pulley will remove the balancer (duh). Whether or not it has any effect on the engine is something I want to find out too, people seem to be arguing about that.

A lot of crank pullies have a rubber ring in them that absorbs engine vibrations. Commonly, aftermarket pullies do not have these rubber rings (harmonic dampeners). If this is the case, the vibrations can (and have in other cars) led to premature bearing failure. There was an article in SCC where they addressed this on their project se-r, and they said that nissan motors come balanced from the factory. Then again, SCC also put 8 quarts of oil into their b16a swap project, and drove it to a shop while smoking and knocking to have someone else figure out what was wrong.Personally, the 2-3 horsepower you might get from running an underdrive crank pulley, isnt worth risk.EDIT: i should also note, that these vibrations are so small, you can't feel them. So just because you dont fell vibrations, doesnt mean they arent there.

I know a few people who are using aftermarket pulleys. The rubber ring on a KA crank pulley is there to take the shock of the a/c compressor. Nissan never made a “dampener” for the KA motor. But for high HP I would use the stock pulley.

I have a KA24DET running an Unorthodox crank pulley for almost a year now. Daily driven. No problems at all. I put about about 24000 miles a year on.

I dont see a problem with using a smaller pulley on a KA motor.
