try a ducati monster s4.... it sits up higher than a normal sportbike, so if you have problems with your back(like my dad, thats why he bought the s4) its a little eaiser, but now he complains about all the presuer is switched to his throttle wrist

and yeah buells are undre powered... specialy the blast... the firebolt (the one with the frame gas tank and oil resivoir swing arm) is some what powered but that is becuase its a liter bike. most people only buy buells because they are loyal to harleys. back to power though.... the buell firebolt has 90 some odd power stock, the ducati monster s4 with a 916 motor in it (this is not the sportier ducati suck as the 998 and new 999) makes some where above 110 i think.

from talking to a guy about the buell, he was boasting that "his bike, with a few grand can make around 100 hp" now im no math wiz but thats still below the DUC.

i still say get the Gixxer 600 or some other 600...

Radian:I was in the AFM for a while. I did it for my senior project...(AFM is the name of the local racing club) I raced in the 600 class with a CBR f3...fairing held on by duck tape :) ok well it wasnt THAT bad but.. I live in Stockton, its a little far away :/Im thinking about selling the VTR too.. im pretty broke right now :(

100 hp with a few grand? my VTR makes something like 110. My first bike was a yamaha seca 2.. it was pretty cool for a begginer bike, great fun to mod.

Duck tape works wonders. If he is gonna get a bike that he has to put a few thousand in it to get 100hp he should have got a Suzuki SV650. The price of the motorcycle, 750cc or 827cc piston kit and motor work. Upgrade the suspension and put on a Sharkskinz full race fairing. Then you would have something and still have money left over.

The only Harley I would have is the VR1000 and that is because it is rare.

If you've never ridden a VMax, I HIGHLY recommend it.

You'll never hear a prettier sound, and that thing will scare the piss out of all but the bravest riders.

Wish I could afford an R1 or and R6 right now... :(

cuz I don't need power, I def don't need speeding ticketsAnd the most i would ever be riding would be 30 minutes. It sounds like a fun bike. I wouldd have to ride one of course but explain why I should go bigger or different?

Well, that is a good reason. I hear for a 250 they have a little torque.

Damn, that V-max looks badass. Well, the reason I wanted a new bike was because I would get a killer deal and be able to finance it. I dont have enough extra cash to just buy a decent used bike, and I want something that looks somewhat new. so maybe I will just wait a few more months and save some more money

The honda and card program allows you to buy anything at the dealer. My friend got his first bike used from a local honda/yamaha dealer and put it on his honda card. after getting my bike, i got my honda card and can buy anything from new bikes to used bikes to new tires, full leathers, helmets, gloves... anything the dealer sells. I'm guessing more and more companies are gonna used this approach to bring in new riders and allow them to purchase not only brand new shiny bikes, but used bikes too.

All 250s have little torque, they're 1/4liter bikes, c'mon you can't expect too much. The Ninja 250 is a great starting point for a commuting bike, they keep decent resale, they're relative indestructable, cheap to insure, and fun to ride. Pretty much all good things. Plenty of aftermarket support, so you can ditch the crappy brakes and get a better suspension.

If you are looking at a 250 try the Aprilia RS250-ahh yummy two stroke goodness. A bit hard to find, and not made anymore (can I have a second to mourn the loss of the last production two stroke motorcycle). That's a real 250http://www.speed-sports.com/mo....html

The engine in the V-rod was designed by Porche, I don't think harley really does any of the enginering themselves, all they can do is styling and 'sound tuning' They have a studio with a microphone array so thy can track down rattles and make the engines sound 'tough'. Hey guys, here's an idea. Lets make an engine that dosn't leak oil-??BTW Buell is about the same. They just take sportster engines and put them in a frame (gas tank frame and oil tank swingarm) that are contracted out and designed by european companys. I'm not really sure what they do to justify putting their name on the tank, other than assembling the pieces.Sorry, I just have contempt for harley riders, I've never met one that has been nice to me.

I agree 100%.

When they build a Harley that'll go 40K w/o ANY maintenance then it'll be time to buy one. Why 40K? Beause that's the abuse I put my Suzuki GS through - Never even changed the oil, LOL.:D

Never had a singe breakdown or mechanical failure on ANY of my bikes.

Yeah, Aprilia RS250s are BA, you can still get them, you just need to show a competition license, and wait for your special order to go through, as they're "off road use only" no signals etc... You can get the RS50, that's still 2-stroke, but only a 50, and technically a scooter, but it's still fun to bomb around on, and it takes a ton of work to ride, lots of shifting, and revving the crap out of it at stops to get it moving again.HD does their own engines, aside from the V-Rod which was their departure from the traditional big twin air-cooled-pushrod motor they've been using for years, I think since late 60's with minor refinements, last major changes in the 80s or so, but I could be wrong, I'll have to re-read some of my HD history.

Yamaha used to sell street legal 2 stroke sportbikes. Early '90s, i think it was the YZR model.? My friend had one and rode it daily, until he had serious engine trouble.

I saw a Honda NSR on the street last weekend. A 400cc 2stroke grey import-oh so cool! Guy had CF pipes and sheet too. Smokey madness!!

40k with no oil changes!?! Dude that is outta control! Did you happen to keep that information to yourself when you sold it? hehe.

Absolutely. Sadly, the guy who bought my first bike from me was hit head on 3 days later and is now a quadriplegic. :(

Mentally, not physically. Unless you are like 5'0" and 100lbs you can get on a bike. Even then, a little seat height mods and your on one.You need to pay attention to what is going on arround you like nothing else, your mind can never drift from what you are doing (be the bike grasshopper). You can't be a show boating fool.If you've been in 4 accidents in the last year (even if they 'are not your fault') a motorcycle is a really bad idea. That's the type of thing Mr. 89sxRCR was refering to...

Good point.

If you can't do 3 things at once, you're not a good candidate for a bike - Stick to cars.

I'm having second thoughts about owning a bike again, simply because I know my reflexes have slowed ever-so-slightly in the past 10 years.

:Werd unlike a car where at the most you are using one foot (2 if its manual) one hand to steer, (again manual, one hand to shift)

a bike requires you to be extremely coordinated mentally and physically (radians right, body types dont matter much)..your left foot shifts, your left hand draws in the clutch, your right hand breaks AND has the accelerator, and your right foot is rear break. And at the same time you must stear with both hands and body movement, all while keeping 100% attention on the road. :) I can think of at least 3 of my friends who swerve while drinking a soda in thier car. Not to mention that in emergencys, anything less then absolute coordination will get you killed. (common begginer mistake is to roll on the gas reaching for the break. ouch)
