Network Engineer for Verizon Business. Been here for over nine years, making decent money but I have a six month old daughter that eats my car fund. Its all good though, one day she will be turning wrenches with me in the garage.

UPS delivery driver. Excellent pay and benefits. 28.50 per hour with mad overtime. Single, no kids. Extremely hard job to obtain. Waiting list can be 5-10 years in certain areas. With bad economy waiting list getting longer and drivers are being laid off due to lack of work. I might have some lay off time next year unfortunately.

I've always wondered about this too . I see so many nice cars with huge mods. I make about 1100 dollars a week after taxes. Working for ABC's tv show LOST here in hawaii, and im only now buying a 240sx and planning to mod it. And even at that i dont feel like i have the funds to do crazy stuff like the things i see on here day to day. But more power to you guys for putting your heart soul and wallet into your babies. I love my 240sx and im planning to do the same.

i always wondered about the same thing but then figured that you gotta sacrifice other things and dedicate money into parts unless you have a really good paying job like some of these guys or own a business like the guy up there with the nice looking silvia....so do you act?? or what do you do working on that show?

edwinS13 wrote:thats cool, and for all of the unemployed, i wish the best for all of you, life is hard and without money it makes it harder, but yea im tryng to get into bmw also, so hows wyotec? im going to uti but i think their the same
Both schools are different as far as teaching style. But I am making a comparison to what was formerly Sequoia Institute which just changed names to Wyotech when I started in September of 2005.

From talking to UTI alumni that transferred to my school and folks that I used to work with, I'll give it to you in this perspective:

Nearly 70% of all UTI guys I've encountered told me that there seems to be a lot more bookwork involved than lab work. I guess the guys that went to the Phoenix campus got a tool box and laptop (not sure if it was before or after completion). But I was told maybe in a 6 week class they would spend approximately 4 weeks time on bookwork. Oddly, it translated into the field when most of the kids I used to work with struggled doing some of the actual work. Classes are nearly 6-8 hour blocks (10 in other campuses), and UTI isn't very forgiving with missing class either from what I've seen.

When I went to Sequoia (because I'm not going to associate that campus with Wyotech in Sacramento), we alternated between lab and class time ALL THE TIME so it was as even as it got as far as hands on and theory. Since Sequoia has been so long established (like 1960s-70s), the teachers and curriculum has been thoroughly explained and refined. The equipment there is old and new, and you get a decent mix of cars to work on. The SMOG program and BMW STEP class there is completely on point, and is definitely worth the money if you are going there. Most of all, you can choose day, afternoon, and evening classes to tailor your schedule around work and errands. EVENING CLASS is the sh*t.

BUT! I still advise most of my prospective peers to really think about going to a community college and seeing how you like it before really stepping up and going to a tech school that is almost 25-40K in tuition. Honestly, you can always get the same experience in a community college and save bundles. Just because your resume says you attended a tech school doesn't mean you're any better than someone who has community college experience, or just work experience. I would say 10% of all the guys I went to school with are happy doing automotive, while the remainder just goofed off or had mom and dad paying the bill.

If you need more advice, ask me. I'm not far away from you either.

dont waste your money on UTI...I went to NTI in Mooresville, NC.. BIG waste of $$$. Go to a community College with a auto tech. program. You will learn the same stuff for a fraction of the price! I'll be paying $56 a month for the next 15 years of my life to pay off my student loan and i'm not even working on car!!!!i do construction

I have been delivering Pizza for almost 15 years at Pizza Hut. It has been easier to make money in the past for me since they are trying to make it so anyone can do it they tie the hands of the good drivers behind their backs. I still ok, and would be doing hella better if not for the 550 a month I pay in Child support for my son.

For those that do Pizza delivery for a living, you NEED 2 cars, and you have to take money and set it aside for repairs which come fast and furious at over 100 miles a day.

I'm lucky that I have been there so long so I get to choose my schedule, I choose to be off Wed, Sat, and Sun, I could make more if I worked more, but I still get 35-40 hours a week normally.

I'm getting to the point where my sx is almost down to the bare essentials for running so I can just hop in there and fix it quick  It's awfully rusted though, I'm going to need to get a new one or tube frame it, I would have to buy a welder to tube it, which would be very cool to have around :D

Full time QA Video Game tester; part time Video Game developer and take 18 units a semester at my local community college.

A word on my job: yes, I love it. No I can't imagine doing anything else. No, it is not an easy job by any means (I use to be a financial analyst for Citi and that was easy compared to this job).

I just got off a 5 week straight of 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now I am back on 5 days a week at 12 hours.

Pheww.... I need to get out more often lol.

I do maintance for cars like oil changes, filters, brakes, and basic stuffs for all my friend's cars and they usually find me jobs when their uncle or somone they know have a minor mechanic problem. Doesn't pay much, but i get few bucks here and there after a while it adds up.
