This rattle is killing me here so I can use a few ideas. It only does it between 3400 and 3600 rpms which i believe is the torque peak for the truck. It will do it on acceleration and deceleration during that small window of RPMs. Really want to get it fixed because this truck has no power if I don't rev passed 3300!

I have changed the following parts: Timing chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, oil pump, rocker shafts, rocker arms, rocker springs.

Any ideas? Could it possibly be a bad catalytic converter? I don't know what detonation sounds like, but is that a possibility. It is a KA24E in a 97 hardbody 4x4, 165K on it.

It is more of a rattle or buzz not really a knocking or low thud.

Check the length of the exhaust system and make sure nothing is loose like a heat shield or something.

Ok, been a while since I posted. I have checked the exhaust heat shields, found the one just after the engine bay to be loose and removed it. It didn't fix the problem, but was probably adding to it.

I have a feeling that it is the tensioner pulley on the power steering belt that is doing it. I noticed that it has some free play forward and back. Cross checked it against my 240 and that one was tight. I plan on ordering a new one tomorrow and will update if I have any luck.

Last post on this thread just incase someone else is trying to figure out a similar problem.

I replaced the A/C belt idler pulley to fix my rattle. It would only do it during a very specific RPM range as I said in the first post. Another thing that led me to think it was the pulley is that the rattle was worse during cold air temps and not too bad with warmer weather regardless of engine temp. I guess the belt would expand and contract enough to make a difference.

Anyway, $20 from Advanced Auto and I don't have any more rattle. It is nice to be able to use the trucks power band.
