I have a 1990 nissan 240sx with 166,000 miles and its a 5spd. I recently encountered a problem when I go to start my car in the morning. I go out and try to start it but on the first turn of the key the car will just keep trying to turn over but it won't. So i turn the key back to the off position and then try to start it again and it will start but it will spit and sputter at about 300rpms and then stall and this will keep happening for about a minute or two and then it will turn over. After that it is perfectly fine. I've had three mechanics look at it and they can't figure it out. They've cleaned the throttle plate and replaced the spark plugs but it doesn't work. Has anyone else encountered this problem. If so please let me know what to do.

Before you do anything expensive check your fuses. I ahd an ignition fuse blown on my SOHC (same symptons as you described) and all i had to do was replace it and my car has started on the first try since then. Does your car only have trouble starting if it has been off for a long period of time 6hours+?

Yeah, sounds kind of like a fuel pump to me, maybe even something as simple as the fuel filter. Check the fuel pump and ignition fuses of course.

I had another mechanic look at my car and he found a small crack in my air intake tube and he taped it up to see if that was it but it still didn't help. He seems to think thats the problem because he said that the MAF isn't getting the right readings from the air intake so its not delivering enough fuel. And I only have problems starting it in the morning its fine the rest of the day. Its only after it sits over night.

Well, i'm gonna jump in on this thread cause it sounds like the same problem that i am have. I just got the car together and am trying to work out all the gremlins. Cold starts are really rough and it usually takes 2-3 turns of the key before it catches, at which piont you still have to gas it a little. this only happens after its been sitting awhile. also i've noticed that sometimes while sitting and idling it will drop down low in the rpms and idle rough. right now its idling at only 900 rpms, should that be a concern? the only code that me an da friend were able to get was for the exhuast gas sencor, snd we replaced that, honestly not sure if it cleared the code, although were pretty sure it did.

I have the same problem.. I every morning if the temp is really low the car wont start at all.. I can start at noon time.. but not at 6 am...I changed th spark plugs last week it had the same problem the next morining but then it started until this morning ... i sprayed it with carb cleaner and it started but only for 30 sec. so I assumed it just used up that carb then dies.. so I think my problem is in the fuel.. maybe injector or fuel pressure regulator.. any help i greatly appreciated./

I need to bring back this thread b/c im havin some simliar problems. The temps here in chicago have been in the negatives and my car is havin trouble startin. It turns over fine and i even got it to start up once and drive around, but it drove really sluggish. It was idleing all over the place and wen i shifted in to 2nd my car wouldnt catch gear and my car would keep jack rabbiting. So now its in my garage and it wont start up at all. I can hear the combustion but it jus sounds like there isnt enuff pressure to keep hte motor goin. Ne tips/suggestions would be helpful.

Thanx
