Hi. im new to the site and i just got my first car, an 89 240 a couple weeks ago. Its a great car but i have suddenly run into a major problem. I parked it outside the store the other day and it seemed to be running normal. Then i went back out and tried to start it. it cranked but wouldnt start. i smelled a lot of gas though. I took the plugs out and saw that they were completly black. they were only a few days old. so my dad came and we continued trying to start it for a while it finally started but idled terribly. we had to rev it hard to keep it running. a lot of black smoke was comin out the tail pipe. if the gas pedal was lightly tapped it would bog and just barely keep from stalling. Getting home was a nightmare because i had to rev the engine hard then pop the clutch from a stop to keep from stalling at lights. It eventually did stall and it wouldnt start but luckily i was close to my house.

i replaced the fuel filter. its funny because the only time the car starts is in the morning after its been sitting all night. It doesnt start after its been running. im guessing this is because the plugs have dried off overnight or something. i checked the computer and it says everythings normal. the engine is a completly stock ka24e. People were suggesting a new maf or o2 or a bad injector maybe. I just need a place to start looking and i figured someone who had a similar problem could help me out.I would appreciate any help. thanx!

i had the same problem on my old s13. i sold it before i fixed it but i basically replaced everything except the o2 sensor on the header. it regualtes air/fuel and this could be why you're bogging so much. hope this helps..sorry dude, i feel for you.

you're definately running really rich, that seems to be the only real problem you're having.

Are there any mods done to the car?

The reason it's not starting is that the motor is flooding from all that fuel..

I would check stuff involved with the fuel system. Fuel pump, FPR, injectors, etc..

problem solved! I drove the car home from school today and while i still had it running i checked under the hood. i messed around with some things until i touched a sensor connector. It had a red cap and was to the right of the throttle body next to what i think might be the temperature gauge sensor. As soon as i touched it i could see and here a difference in the way the engine sounded. i pushed it a in a little and the problem was instantly solved. I dont know wat the sensor was because i dont have the service manual yet but this is definatley the cause of the problem. thanks to all who responed with their help. i apprieciate it.
