I have a 1990 300ZX 2+2 that I have owned since I purchased it in 1990. It hasn't been my daily driver for a number of years, but I love to take it out now and then. It has 180,000 miles on it. The transmission was overhauled about 80,000 miles.
My transmission started acting up a month or so ago. At first I thought that it was slipping between 1st and 2nd and between 2nd and 3rd, but now I'm beginning to wonder if it is shift solenoids instead.
It just started (this past week) staying in first much longer than it should before dropping into 2nd. Actually, if I let up on the gas, it will shift. It appears to shift from 1st to 3rd with a split second stay in 2nd gear.
How can I tell if it is the solenoids or not. If it is the solenoids and not the clutch plates, would the computer throw off any codes?

I have some of the same issues with mine. The only time I noticed a bit of a change is when I messed with the TPS, that ties into the timing of the shifting so much. If this is old, its possible it may have a worn down or even a dead spot so it tricks the comp that it needs to shift in third.

I agree with NOlimitz32, 5sp swap. Thats what Im doing when I swap to a TT! Getting sick of the way the auto shifts, no shifts and I just don't want to spend the money to fix something that has always sucked.

Thanks for the suggestion of the TPS. I will have to look into that as well.
I don't know about your AT, but mine has been a very strong performer for years. I wouldn't swap it for a 5sp if you paid me.

I have always been a fan of a manual trans, I just got a really good deal on this z. It also had paperwork that the trans was also rebuilt not too many miles ago. When I was replacing gaskets it sat for almost 1 1/2 years without fluid, so Im pretty sure the entire issue with mine is the solinoids. But I know eventually im swapping to a TT, so I just don't want to put more money into it until the swap is done. Besides, this is just a secondary car, pretty much weekends only with a trip to the mountains.

Let us know what you find out, and hopefully its an easy fix.
