Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd?

My friend has a 89 Hatch AUTO(same thing as my) that has a prob of hard shifting from 1st to 2nd for some reason after 2nd it run fine. and in the morning the car die if you don't press the gas for about 1-2sec after you start it or after you put it in R!:(
