Hello. When getting used to a manual trans, it takes time, but in general getting smoothly into first gear, and then from first to second smoothly is much more difficult then the rest of the gears. That said, a lot of 240s (and a lot of other low buck low power cars) are put through a lot of low end abuse. IE hard/powershifting from 1st to 2nd, and as a result the syncromesh for second gear tends to be the most worn out. This is somewhat normal.
All that said, I suggest you just take your time learning. Dont expect to know more then you actually do and you'll find (through experimenting and so on) ways to make it shift at a rpm better suited for your worn syncros.

What are your intentions with this car?

Throw some redline transmission fluid in there, it will make the shifts much easier.

Hard to shift, or is there grinding?

Now be careful when using gear oil, know what you can use. It calls for GL-4 which is hard to find at a store, GL-5 has detergents what will damage soft metals (copper, brass) which the shift forks and syncros are made from.

I suggest .56 QT of Pennsoil syncromesh, and 2.0 quarts of Amsoil GL-4 75-90 gear oil.
