Driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue and tonight I changed my T case and rear differential fluid, but I noticed a hanging heat shield with insulation behind it that covers the gas tank. Based on how big it is, it looks like it went on before the exhaust as it would be hard to manipulate this large piece in place afterwards.

Any suggestions, not sure if this is something I can just remove as it does seem to be protecting the gas tank from the heat of the exhaust.

I think I removed it without a problem... a bit later will post picture of mine, because I am not sure if we are talking about same thing.

That big one back by the tank really only does anything when you're stuck in traffic in summer heat. So how necessary it is depends a lot on where you live and the type of driving you do.

may be less water/snow/whatever on top of rear muffler (less rust "stimulus")?

For those purposes, I'd still call it a nicety. "Nice" is making your ride rust a little slower. "Necessary" is preventing the engine from vapor-locking in the center lane in bumper-to-bumper beach traffic.
;)
