So I got a diff from this japanese guy and I think its out of an s14, It had a KAZZ 2 way and a small ratio ring gear in it. He said I could use it in my 240 when I go to the states. So here I am I put the stock ring gear on the LSD and put it in my housing. But the half shafts from the diff he gave me are longer than the stock 240 half shafts. I don't have new axles so I put the stock ones in and took it for a test drive. There was a strong clicking coming from the passengers side during acceleration, but would stop the second I let off the gas. also I found a C clip that fell off the old half shaft. I took the diff back out but can't see any obvious damage to any of the teeth. Is this LSD not compatible with my half shafts, I want to make it work but I'm about to put the open poop diff back in.

I'm not familiar with the kaaz clutch LSDs, but VLSDs use different output shafts than open diffs. I'd do a google search on the correct output shafts.

its hard to know for shure what diff I have because they all look the same. But I know the 5 bolt shafts work, where could I find the 5 bolt axels?

Hello,

If it is a 5 bolt differential, than you can get 5 bolt CV axles for a Q45 and they should bolt right up. They use the same Spindle nut and length at the spindle side so should work perfectly fine. Also they are a hair thicker so they may be slightly stronger. But not a noticeable difference.

I hope this helps even though its 6 days late. I do apologize. Registered just to reply to this.

I don't think that shoving the Q45 axles in an S13 will work too well. The track width is nearly over 2" wider on a Q, and that width on Nissan multilink suspensions is usually made up in the subframe. The links are the same across the models, however. So usually that means wider tracked cars get longer axles to accomodate. A few mils to a half inch usually falls in range of tolerance, but a full inch or more could lead to popping CV seals.

In fact, we have a write up on the boards about swapping a Q45 diff into an S14, but to deal with the track width difference, the installer used the driver's axle from a Q on the pass side of the 240. The passenger axle is the longer of the two on a 240, so he took the shorter Q axle (driver side) and it fit the longer space of the 240's passenger axle.

I thought 1993 J30 axles were 5 bolt and the right length?

J30's are longer, BUT I believe they fall within the tolerance of length for the CV joints. The J30 is about 30mm wider in the subframe than the S13, but that translates to about quarter inch of extra compression per CV joint. I did a quick google search about failure rates and couldn't find much. The guys at NRR suggest that the easiest way to check would be to install the axles, remove the coil spring and work the suspension through its full arc and see if you get any binding issues.

But yes, early model J30s should have a 5 bolt star pattern. However, mid to late 90s J30s have the same 3 prong 6 bolt the S-Chassis uses. The two J30s I've pulled stuff from were from '95-'97 and both had the 6 bolt design.
