This is one of the happiest things I have ever typed. I think I'll be on this euphoric high for weeks, just from this article.

The game looks incredible beyond anything I had hoped for (and I had some HIGH hopes for it). I would be willing to bet it'll get game of the year awards easily as numerous as the original did (20 from major publications, and who knows how many from little sites like mine). I want mine NOW!!I've had my copy of Half Life 2 reserved at the local Gamestop since August 2003. November 7, I finally get to pick up my Collector's Edition of Half Life 2 and find out what the F*CK happened to Gordon Freeman after the strange ending of Half Life. I think I'll be parked in front of this computer for a while.

I've finished the original around 50 times--some cheating, some not. You find some fun hidden **** in HL if you cheat a lot. Valve must have been high when they made it.

If you pick up the Collector's edition of HL2, you'll get the original HL re-released in the new Source engine with the new Havok physics engine! Ragdoll zombies!!!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee,,, WOW!!

did u finish designing your new pc yet?

it wouldn't be a good idea playing HL2 on a college workstation.

yeah, first one was nice, i used to throw a ****load of grenades and rockets at G-man hiding behind bulletproof glasses. walking through walls. would be nice to have that ability IRL. -NOCLIP, he he.

when Half life 2 is out, i will try to organize LAN party at our Engineering school. last year we had one, and couple comp science PhD's also joined us. it was nice.

For people who have good graphic cards:

have you ever tried playing games on your TV.I connected my PC to 32" good looking TV and played Far Cry once. OMG it was something out of this world.

I had to set TV as a main display and disable the monitor. Since TV's dont require more than 1280x960 res at 60hz, it was as smooth as it can get. I also turned anisotropic and antialiasing filtering on, so it was a blast.

I sat there and watched ocean in Far Cry for about an hour.

couple that with 7.1 spkrs and audigy2zs and YOU WILL HAVE A FAT *** IN JUST WEEKS.

oh eyah, high res wirlss mouse and keyboard was a necessity.

I wonder how it would look with good plasma display or nice quality projector.

anywayss, if anyone tried this with a good image quality TV, they know how it looks. its like looking at graphics of next 2 gen of graphic cards.comparing that with Xbox image quality is like comparing xbox to hanheld gameboys.

Actually, I found a VERY nice laptop for 1700. A lot cheaper than I was going to pay. It's a step down on processor (Just an Athlon 64, not FX) and a couple steps down on video card (only a Radeon 9700 platinum). But that's more than enough for even HL2 (according to Valve, that'll do just about everything but maxed out FSAA and water effects). Plus a better warantee than the place I was going to get my desktop from would do. That way, I can play HL2 and UT2k4 in class. Mwahahahaha.

By the way, it's looking like the slaves (the crackly-shocky guys with three arms) and a couple other alien species are on Gordon's side now. Sha-wing!!I wonder. WHat the hell is that wierd half bug/half helicopter thing is. I bet it hurts.

if u get anything different that intel pentium mobile(715-755), like power hungry chips, you always have to be plugged in.

the laptop youre getting will be for gaming only. besides it will be quickly outdated, and with smaller screen you wont be happy.

and you wont be able to be productive at school. again, you gotta be plugged in. off topic: i'm currenly working on this new thing. Im taking my digital camera apart. i only gonna need its zooming part and retina, which will be placed in a tube, and i will have to connect it to my pc through usb. AND in class i can just take screen shots of whatever is on the board. thats where zoom comes in. i wonder why we dont have such, eyeglass mounted cameras on market for students, that connect to laptop thru USB.--------------------------------------------

dnt get that laptop. get a decent desktop pc for gaming that'll last.

or get longer lasting intel pen mobile like zt300. consider weight/performance/batterylife/features/toughness.==================================================

driving is a priveledge, and my lisence is always suspended, always! dmv has such a high APR taxing system that wont let u get outta debt of suspended license.

i saw this "AVARYPOWER", pretty sure didn't spell it right., but link is at my work PC. i'll get it.

its like a wide a$$ battery that increases you laptop battery life upto 16 hours. it weights 1.9 pounds, charged in 5 hours.

dimensions: 0.3" thick, 10" wide, 12" length. price: $250 or to be exact: $249.99.

now thats a product of 21st century, i am amazed first time in 2 years.

My friend has one of those.

I don't care about screen size. I don't want a pentium--even for the extended battery life, it's just not worth the performance loss. There are two things my computer must do. 1. Run Half Life 2 well at a good framerate with at least decent looks. and 2. Word process/spreadsheet/wireless networking.

That'll do both. The gaming side won't make the school side suffer. If I buy a school PC, I'll just be dissatisfied with its gaming performance and buy a new one in a year. I won't need to do that with this one. I NEED a PC that will run Half Life 2--and my roommate's doe's not count. I have waited six LONG years for this game. I can use my old laptop (the PIII 500) for school if it comes to that. 4 hour battery life, big screen, it's got Microsoft Office on it. I MUST have a good gaming PC.

Speaking of which. I don't know if you've seen this month's PC Gamer or not. There is a contest to win a $6000 Falcon Northwest desktop. I'm hoping I'll win that. They'll be giving out the prize before I can afford my laptop anyway (I'm gonna pay in cash--I HATE loans and payment plans and such...I just end up worrying if I'll have the money when the time comes), so I won't have wasted $1700 on it.

can't believe you said that, god i cant believe it.

if u're getting notebook get a freaking longest battery available with decent graphics chip.

get desktop PC for gaming.

OR buy all the parts, and stop by one day and i'll put it together for ya.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!! I switched to 21" from 17" and you know what it is a heaven. please, try your doom3 or upcoming HL2 in 21" and see what i mean?

also, if u play games w/big screens, image quality goes down due to pixelation. you have to increase resolution to avoid that. ex; i ahve to play at 16x12 to get a decent image quality, but gameplay is awesome. its all around you.

Oh, if I'm going to buy individual parts, I'm definitely going to put it together myself. I've done built enough computers to be able to do it in my sleep.

I don't know...why would I want a pentium 4 when I can have a FX53? 95% of the time, I am within ten feet of a plug, and that includes during classes. There's nothing wrong with plugging in to a wall...Besides...I can see game developers taking advantage of 64 bit architecture in the next few years. This is THE computer I'll have in the next few years. So it HAS to be able to run 64 bit stuff.

I'm thinking I will just buy individual components and build myself a desktop. Does pricewatch require payment with a credit card to make purchases? I don't have or want one, so I'm screwed if they do.

And yet...I REALLY need a laptop. I need something that's not so f*cked up that wireless networking won't work at all...but I swore to myself all those years ago...I swore to never buy another Intel chip as long as I lived. Then again...I also swore that I'd never buy another nVidia card, too, and I'm putting a GeForce 6800 Ultra in it...

Heh...ahh the G-Man. I noclipped into every room I saw him go into. Some of them he wasn't there...must have de-spawned. He's made of metal though...hit him with the crowbar and he sparks and makes that clanging sound. Maybe I can kill him this time...kinda hard to have a HL3 (which there will be--this from Valve) without the G-Man though...

just edited my pre-post.

and you know waht, maybe you're right about your decision.

pricewatch.com is not a company. what i meant was, it just lists all the offers from different retailers with lowest prices. you simply click on buy and it takes you to that sites products page. sometimes to main page, sometimes you have to mention pricewatch to get taht lowest price. once you order couple of times thru pricewatch you will never wanna pay high retail.

forget whatever i said earlier. here, i found that external battery link. check out link above.

think about it. being able to play half life 2 for at least 6 hours on battery power at full details. holy ****, this is awesome. im excited, in a sexual kinda way. blow me biiiiaches!!!!

if you want to pay $300 for external battery that will fit into your carrying case and if u dont mind carrying extra 2.4 lbs around,

then get a fastest cpu you can/afford and ati mobile 9800 graphics chip which comes with 256mb of memory. (i thnk dell xps offers it)

omg, possibilites are endless, im so excited, and hyped up from 3 cups of coffee i've been drinking at work right now.

read this site before you choose your perfect notebook cpu:

OOOOHHH!! Nice!! And I know from my parents monster PC that the 9800 is a great card...it ran DOOM3 and Far Cry at the same time without a hitch...not maxed out all the way though.

I like this idea. I'll have to deal with limited battery life for a month till I can afford the battery afterward...but HELL YEAH. HL2 wireless LAN parties all day long!!

As for screen size...it's the LAST thing on the list. I will not sacrifice processing power or graphics power or ram or CD drive speed so I can afford a bigger screen. I can deal with a 17'' screen just fine.

I don't know...they are so expensive, and I'm only making about $1100a month. Blast.

News from the Intel side of things (suddenly I am reminded of Team America: "We have lost intelligence. Repeat, we have NO intelligence!"). Intel raises speed of top end Centrino. While far from a leap forward, it's still progress. And at least they have FINALLY crossed the 2 ghz line.

A link to the article...because I know you're as big a tech geek as me!!!http://www.techweb.com/wire/hardware/51000029

honestly dell xps shouldn't cost $2200. by my standards it should be about $1600-1800. and u know i read somewhere that ati mobility 9800 derived from x800 desktop version architecture. yes i remember, it actually is. wass up with naming. their marketing sucks at it heh.

Oh, that long life ext battery only has 250 life cycle. so, less than a year life for $300. i hope its worth it.

Somewhere I read some controversy over the name of the ATI card. They didn't want to name it a x800 because they'd get bitched out for inferior performance and perhaps false advertising (because its noticably slower...because its a mobile version) but they figured no one would complaing about getting aboost from what they'd expect from a 9800 mobile. At least they didn't do what some idiot company (don't remember who, too lazy to look) did with a GeForce 6800. It's really an older card, bumped up to near-6800 specs...but with the old architecture...and they still call it a 6800. WTF!!!???

take intel pentium mobile chips multiply chip speed by 1.6 and thats the kind of performance you get when plugged in. How? due to its large A$$ L2 cache.

ex: 2.1ghz*1.6 = 3.36ghz type of performance of actual pentium 4s.

Screw school. Screw life. Screw EVERYTHING!!! Nothing matters besides Half Life 2. Until I have played it and enjoyed it and absorbed is awesomeness I will find it very difficult to care about anything else.I'm currently going throught that "it's-almost-here-but-not-quite-and-I-can't-take-the-waiting-much-longer" phase that I just barely pulled out of with GTA:SA. It's terrible.

Only 11 days to go...That's 12 too many.
