They're so tempting to buy.
Battery...fall...out...
Never heard of that one. The battery lid takes effort to come off...I can't see it falling off unless there's something wrong with the release button. Even with the battery door off, you have to pull the battery out...you can shake it violently and the battery is not going anywhere.
I have ZERO dead pixels, everything works except my PC won't recognize it when I connect via USB...oh well I have a card reader which is actually easier anyway.
I've heard some fun horror stories, but you have to remember, the people who got non-broken ones don't go around posting "hey, my psp isn't broken." They're too busy using the things.
Only gripe is the battery life. Minor gripe about how amazingly shiny it is, because fingerprints show easily, and it scratches easily.
I'm leaving for a trip to Las Vegas tomorrow (won't be driving most of the time), so I'm even more glad I've got it...I have Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Blackhawk Down, Hellboy, Reign of Fire, and House of Flying Daggers all on UMD..as well as my games. I'll just need my inverter so I can plug it in.
There are white ones coming soon, which will ship with the North American version of the Firmware 2.0 (I've got the japanese version--they'll end up being the same, though). I think the white is nasty, though. As I always say, "Everything looks better in black."
And best of all...october 4th, GTA: Liberty City Stories. Looks absolutely bloody AMAZING, and should be on par with Vice City for game features...with select features from San Andreas, and a new improved targeting system. Rockstar basically said "No, it's not GTA: portable. It's just the next GTA game, on the PSP. There's nothing "lite" or "pocket" about it. It's the real thing. Only limitation is the controls, but I've come up with a good scheme...so I assume rockstar has, too.
