Yea, so I thought I was all cool because I have SDS, so I don't need the CAS and so I haven't had the upper timing cover on the motor in a long time. Well last Saturday I'm driving the car and I start smelling burnt rubber and hearing something weird. So I shut it off and pop the hood. The first thing I spot is a nice deep groove in the timing belt and melted bits of rubber all over the tensioner and idler pulley's. Great, just what I needed. I was in a hurry too.

So I limp it back home, borrow my Mother in Laws car to get my kid and order another timing belt.

So tonight I start tearing it apart, and sure enough, somehow a little rock had bounced up into the engine bay, and then down into the lower timing cover. It then wedged itself between the belt and the outer lip of the oil pump. What are the odds of that?

Needless to say I put the upper timing cover back on tonight. At least nothing major happened. It cost me less than $20 for the belt and a couple of hours of my time.

Moral of the story: All of the rocks in the world should be collected and dumped into the ocean.

Moral of the story: If you arent going to run an upper cover, get rid of the bottom one as well, otherwise all the crap just collects in it

I've considered that, but then how do you set your timing w/o the lower timing covers little pointer?

You should leave the lower half on and instead infuse your block with an anti-rock/debris force field to deflect them back to the ground when they shoot in your engine bay....

jk i just leave mine on

you could cut the bottom off of it, so anything that goes in will fall out

this is exactly why i refuse to take off the cover. i thought this would have happened to someone sooner. so im just gonna say ahahahahaha i told you so. anyway, im glad you caught it before it broke and made you cry. autozone timing belts ftw!! i usually end up changing mine every 15-20k because they are so cheap. (and i usually break something significant and replace the belt while im at it)

I didn't think of that. Oh well, too late now. I might do it when I replace the HG.

You remember that I know where you live and that I'd really like to kick you in the junk, right?

I'd like to have my top cover on, but it causes a tiny bit of interference with the hood on the MG, so it's off right now. I'm going to be changing to a "C" style hood soon, then the issue should be resolved.

As long as you keep brining in those first place medals in the Special Olympics, you're safe.

to answer the question about setting timing-

you run an SDS, and dont need teh CAS (the sourse of your trouble)

a solution is to set the timing, and then remove the cover after (you dont need to reset timing after removing the crank pulley, just the timing cog, right?)

so, besides cutting the lower cover, theres another option

but yeah, a rock PWNED you

i win

CJ

PS - modified RB clear timing belt cover FTW?

I'm just gonna rock the upper cover. It's not like I've got some awesome adjustable cam gears that I'm trying to show off. Heck the stockers aren't even painted so they look nice.
