So I was going through my phone book and found a number of which I had no idea whom it belonged to. I didn't want to be a jerk by calling and saying, "Hey who is this? You weren't important enough to me for me to register you in my memory."

So what do I do? I go and open up Microsoft Hyperterminal. This program is supposed to be used to modify you internet parameters and other cool customizations when your internet is being a total whore. But you can do other things too, usually those other things are illegal.

Anyway, I dial in the number using hyperterminal and this is pretty much how the conversation went.

"Hello?" I realize it's a girl and the voice sounds familiar. "Hello?" Who is it? "Hello?" Gosh, I've almost got it. "HELLO!?" Oh! I think I know who it is. But then I realize that I can't say anything. "Whoever this is you're such a creep, if I find out who you are..." I disconnect.

So I think I figured out who it is but I just realized that it was probably much more jerky for me to have done this rather than fess up to my mistake. Oh well another mound of dust pushed under the rug. It's the American way.

Hyperterminal ... think Matthew Brodderick in the movie War Games.

I'm guessing this was a cell # or you would have tried a reverse look up online. Another idea is call the number from some pay phone or better yet, so friends house .

even if you call from hyperterminal, you're still calling from your phone line. So it defeats the purpose.

LOL! Thats why I try not to let girls see my phones. If I dont have their #, they put it in there w/o telling me.

Do you do this?

well, if it was a home phone number do as Rex said, you could have went to anywho.com or 411.com and done a reverse look up.

Ok, so how exactly does this work?

I know how to use phone dialer, etc.., to dial from a PC with a modem, but does any of this work via a LAN/T1? How would I dial, for instance, my cell phone from a T1 via Hyperterminal?

Yeah, this is still what I want to know. I'm not interested in the Caller ID avoidance or anything, I just want to know how to dial a cell phone from a broadband connection without paying for some VoIP service.
