There are quite a few of us here who have upgraded the stock halogen H11 bulbs to a plug-n-play HID kit. There is a little bit of work involved, but pretty much everyone who has done it here feels it is worth it. I thought that the stock halogen setup was inadequate for night driving where I live, so I'm running a 4300K 35W kit from XenonDepot.
There are a few halogen bulbs that are considered upgrades and can put out a whiter light; I didn't bother with them because those bulbs don't seem to last that long and I don't think it's that easy to access the low beam bulbs when changing them out.
And we also have the new guy in town, LED bulbs. Not many of us here have tried them as a headlight upgrade, maybe one or two guys if I recall correctly. They'll definitely put out a whiter light than halogens. Light output might be better as well. I don't know about their longevity though. If you want to be an early adopter and try them out, let us know how it turns out.
