Paying for a gym membership makes no sense.

But hey, I'm different from you guys and have different priorities.

I may not be able to bench or curl as much, but lets see how many pieces of 3/4" plywood you can lift and set in place.

The problem with the gym is that you are focusing on specific muscle groups. I have found that guys that are really built/bulky from the gym are pretty much useless when it comes to manual labor tasks.

This is why I say that people that go to the gym are dumb. You may look "cool" with your 6-pack, but you're probably pretty damn useless.

Country boy > Gym nancy.
The problem with PEOPLE at the gym is that THEY do all ISO workouts. The gym is still a useful tool and contains a hell of a lot more functionality than my house. Let's see how many 80lb bags of water softener salt you can carry at a time compared to me and then walk them up and down flights of stairs. Or 6 gallon jugs of water.

You're only as useless as you make yourself. And the ladies swoon at my 6pack after I pick up a pile of bricks, getting done with a 15 mile run.

More than you.
Possibly.
AppleBonker wrote:3/4" plywood? Really? That's your metric for measuring usefulness. I think you are definitely right; we do have different priorities. While you're out playing with your own wood, I'm making panties drop. Women > lumber.
That's just one of them. Digging up and moving cubic yards of dirt with a shovel and wheel barrow is another... There are a lot of useful things.

Oh, and I have no difficulty with women. Sorry that you have to pay an establishment to help you improve your physical appearance to the point where women find you attractive...

Lucky you.

Where do you go, and how is it free?

I still stand by my statements though. People that bulk up at the gym generally aren't that useful when it comes to physical tasks.

I typically carry two 80lb bags at a time as that's all that we buy at a time...

Never touched a 6 gallon jug other then the one I use for change. We buy it by the gallon.

Another one is five gallon buckets of water. On a daily basis I have to water our garden with ~50~100 gallons of water. Carried two at a time. Distance is usually ~25 yards...

We are turning this into a pissing match. Back on point, most people that attend the Gym are not useful outside of the gym when performing physical tasks.

Oh, did I mention that it's 95 degrees and >80% humidity most of the time here.

You guys get to enjoy your ~72 degrees and ~15% humidity to work out in...

*edit* I agree that people do isolated workouts. Not good...

Well, if you believe in TINSTAAFL, it's technically not free. Rather, it's included in my rent. So it doesn't cost me anything MORE to go, and I wouldn't save money by not going. My complex doesn't have it's own weight room so I guess they worked out a deal with the gym across the street. I just wish it were a 24-hour establishment.

And, back on topic, regardless of if you're going to the gym, out running or moving plywood around and digging holes (?), music is a pretty important motivational tool IMO. I know people who workout to slow jams and the like, and I'm not sure how this is possible. As I said before, give me some driving rock or metal or similar and I'll be happy.

I never understood the slow jams thing either.

Like I said before, some good classic rock is what we use. I usually don't bother using a playlist. There are a couple of good local radio stations.

That is what i'd prefer to listen to... but at crossfit you feel a bit alienated if you rock headphones, not to mention you need the spacial awareness provided by being able to hear LOL, dont need olympic bars dropping on ur face cause ur not paying attention.

its really too bad they have a bunch of tweenies picking the music. way too much pop and rap going on at my gym now. too many soccer moms with 10lb bumper plates not doing shyte. needs moar metal y0

I've gotta say though, even if a person just works their glamor muscles, that's better than being a lazy slob at home.

I hate using my gym. Its like being a rat in a cage, stuck doing slave work until a sufficient amount of time has gone by. I prefer to be outdoors, even when its ridiculously hot. Not going outside once in a while turns me into a cranky a-hole.

Oh man, I gotta say I miss the gym. I think that's gonna be my new bill when I finally land a job and can afford things on my own again. I listen to Em, trance, club hits, and some rock like the Killers, the Strokes, the Bravery.

Well I pretty much never do iso workouts. I do 90% free weights with compound movements that work a lot of muscle groups at the same time. And am pretty strong for my size and im still good at helping people move or doing any physical labor. I usually work a lot longer and harder then most of my friends.

I would agree that if guys who only use machines are a bunch of nancy boys. The iso machines are really only used to help with definition not to get bigger or stronger

I'd tell you to give it a try, but I'm not sure how effective it would be on bags of sand or farm animals (or whatever substitution you hillbillies use for women).

I use free weights at home (no gym)

I have 6 dumbbells, 2-15/2-25/2-35. I am going to have to get some 40+ before long because 35 is getting easy. Most people who look at me probably dont think I can curl that with one hand (I know its not much compared to most of you). And on my bar I have 100 that I curl and do bench press lifts off of the floor (no bench). Also do girl pushups (ingrown toenails on both big toes) and sit ups. Once the weather chills and I get off of my current medicine walking starts on the local greenway (like 3 miles)

Lol at PMQ being a "country boy."

I've been a country boy. And while the guy "doing the machines" maybe more useless per pound that you (doubtful, flabby), he's probably still more useful. And the guy moving real iron...? What do country boys do? Pick up fence posts? You're looking at a combination of a deadlift and a press. Or, a clean and jerk.

Name me ONE activity you do in your house, and I can find a common exercise that'll make you better at it, that you do at the gym. Don't lump people's obsession with the machines and mirror muscles in with useful things gyms have, like a squat rack.

And I'm with TMS, I listen to the gym. Unless there's music. Then I listen to the audio versions of The Economist.

Yeah, but that's boring. It feels like you're trapped and not getting anything done.

I feel the same way about sleep -- it feels like time wasted. I get a ton of it anyway.

Your best bet are ear buds with a headband that goes around the back of your head or hooks that go over your ears. I have some Nike ear buds with ear hooks that stay in very well, but it does mean you get extra sweat around your ears. And the sound quality is just passable.
