Most American's have some misconceptions about China (Asia in general).
I stopped in Hong Kong first... this is the view from my room. Hong Kong is exspensive comparably to LA or NYC.

There is a lot of fun to be had in HKG, very decent night life, many shopping areas

If your rich in HKG you have a very nice car this is a pretty standard traffic jam. 730li BMW 330i BMW, a Mercedes and a Land Cruiser. Most people use cabs, the train or buses. I walked most places because I wanted to experience HKG and I'm cheap. Cab rides are 100-300 HKG $13-40 USD. A ride from my Hotel to the airport was 300.
Almost everyone in HKG speaks English all the signs are in English.
