Hey Everyone.

I have a leased 2008 G35 IP sedan. Yesterday a stupid girls backed a F150 into the rear bumper of my car while it was parked in an empty parking lot. Words cannot describe how pissed off I am. Anyways, coming back to the issue.... They will need to replace the bumper with a new one. The car is 5 months old and is rarely in the sun. The body shop is saying even tho there is no damage on quarter panels, to get 100% paint match they need to blend the quarter panels. IF not, then the best they can match the bumper is 85%.

Now I am not sure if I want them to do anything to the quarter panel. What do you guys think?

1. Should I let them blend the quarter panel

2. Do not let them paint any other panel other than new bumper because the match should be ok and not noticeable.

I need advise from all you experts.

Thanks in Advance!

By IP you mean Ivory Pearl? (If so great choice, it's like mine)I imagine that the pearl paint is rather difficult to match and blending might be the way to go. I had a similar problem with my red 06 max, and they blended the paint perfectly.

I think the question is whether or not you trust the body shop and the work they do. If not, ask around and go look at some of the work they do. A good body/paint shop can do wonders with paint matching. I'd sit down with the manager and ask if they are getting enough from the ins. co. to do the job right, and if not, I'd be on the phone insisting they did.

Yes, it is Ivory Pearl. I know the body shop does a very good job as the local infiniti dealership has all there stuff done by this body shop.

And thats exactly what the body shop said, ivory pearl is the most difficult to match because it requires 3 stage paint and the last pearl coat is the hardest to match. And he recommends blending for best results. I have seen there work and they do a good job.

So what do you guys think?

Let them blend it in. That is the only way they can make the differences invisible. Make sure you'll get good warranty on the paint in writing.

+1 on letting them blend. Make sure your shop will do any touch up for overspray that may not show up for a while. When I had my door repaired for a scratch, they blended the rear bumper and about 6 months later I had to have them buff out the overspray. Looks great now!

Alright, all I have to say is that I'm impressed. Mine is an 06 and it hasn't seen too much garage time (except for the winter) because quite frankly I don't have a garage except for at my parents'. Yours is an 08, there should be hardly any fading going on anyway. With mine, all they did was match for the bumper and painted it. If the best they got it to was 85%, I still can't tell. I'll provide an update later tonight when I get a chance to look at it under some sun.

Make sure it's one of the shops that your insurance company recommends or that you are "tight" with. The warranty you get on the job should include fixes if things go awry in the future.

The IP has 3 coats of pearl on top of the 3 or so coats of white/ivory. Normally, I'd tell the shop where they could shove it if they couldn't do better than an 85% color match, but with IP, just let them blend it.

Let them blend the quarter panels.

Matching a 3 stage pearl aint easy if you don't blend the immediate panels.

Thanks for all the replies guys !

Well her insurance called me up and are saying they are having trouble picking up liability so I should get it fixed under my insurance and let my insurance recover costs from them\her. They will not tell me why because of privacy rules.

This works better for me as I have uninsured motorist collision deductible waiver and thus I don't have to pay a penny out of pocket.

So it seems like alot of folks here feel that blending it the right way to do this. I am very picky about my car and will hate the fact if it dont blend in. So I am thinking blending is the best\right way to go. As long as my insurance (amica) does not say that they will not cover blending.

California has some weird laws. Your insurance company has to go with whatever quote you give them. Then they and the bodyshop will negotiate rates and actual labor done.

Another option is to contact your insurance company and have them refer you to a shop. That has it's benefits and drawbacks.

Did you get a police report? If there's a police report and it says your vehicle was parked, there is no question of liability. Also make sure that the other person understands that a parked car is covered under their property insurance portion of auto insurance. I fought over that for 2 months before getting mine fixed. The hardest part was getting them to understand that it isn't considered a crash, but property damage, because somewhere along the line the agent was being told it was parked. I just kept getting unsatisfactory answers that there's a deductible and my insurance covers the rest, which was flat out wrong. I finally had to print something from the state to show them how it worked. I used the threat of my insurance going after their insurance to get some action and it finally worked. But if you do run into problems, let your agent know so he can start taking care of it and let you know what you need to do, if anything.

there was no police report as they said since its a parking lot "private property" they do not take reports.

I am waiting to hear back from bodyshop regarding the supplement "blending" to be approved and waiting to hear back from my insurance whether this is going to be an uninsured motorist incident or what. This whole insurance business is a big scam I swear... When it comes to taking money, these insurance companies will do anything and at the time of payout they become bungholes.

I have to disagree. I'm not an advocate of the insurance biz, but I've had quite a few good scenarios with the 2 companies I've worked with. The only issue I've seen is where my insurance company didn't want to fight liability with the other party.

I also had an issue where a guy was in the "dummy lane" with his signal to turn left. I proceeded to pass him going just under the speed limit and he decided to pull back into my lane without warning. I slammed on my brakes and hit him. He started to take fault and then I asked him to assum liability and he said "F*ck no!". Eventually his insurance assumed 100% liability. Such a sweet victory lol.

Just know your rights and be willing to lawyer up if necessary. I would sue for additional damages if a lawyer is involved.

Another vote for blending.and for going with a shop approved by your insurance.

Wifie took out a deer with her 03 pathy a few years ago and we found a shop that gave a life time guarantee on their work. And, they blended. Looked great when they were done!!!

We ended up trading the Pathy for her 05 Sedan at our local Nissan dealer.

We learned that some lady was taking it out for a test drive when she accidentally rammed it into the car in front of her and then backed it into the one behind her .....in the used car parking lot!!!!

Had I not had to give my Maxima to my stepson, it would have been going in for a repaint. The whole car.

I had a fender that was smashed, and they replaced it. I called back and said that the poaint didn't match, and had a little too much metal flake. Thay said give it 6-8 weeks for the paint to cure and the weather to blend the paint. :rollseyes

Took it back 8 weeks later, they repainted the front again. Same problem... wait 6-8 weeks and third try...

Same problem. While waiting for that 6-8 weeks to pass, I gave the car to my stepson. Would have kept it, and had the paint done, but he needed the car asap.

My incident happened in my driveway, the police wouldn't come out but they said we could go to them and do it. So if you can arrange it, that could be an option. Here are some pictures with the new front bumper, I know they aren't close ups, but I can't see any difference when I actually look at it, and you can't tell in these pictures. They may have blended it, I have no idea, there was no talk of blending, I just assumed it would be done so it matched. But the shop I had it done at has a lifetime warranty on their work.

i had the opposite happen to my Pearl Coupe.. a stupid girl backed into my quarter panel.. and the body shop needed to blend into the bumper.. Most definitly necessary with the pearl..
