First I wanted to say Thanks for all your help with my first problem. After I had that guy come back and look at the thermo he installed again, problem was fixed but now I have a new one or may be same one! I was coming home from the beach the other day and car started to overheat, pulled over, checked under car and there was water on the ground ( had not run a/c) , got some anti-freeze and water, let car cool off and made it home. Since then, car still tends to overheat every once in awhile and yesterday I stopped at store and heard a hissing noise. Drove the car home and started to hear clanking. Got home and popped the hood and there was steam shooting out and water on the ground.....not a lot....any ideas what is going on now??? Any help/advice would be appreciated!!!!! Thanks Guys!

first thing you should do is check the head gasket (compression test) to see if you let it go. check your coolant and see if there is ANY oil in it and visa versa.

If thats fine then check yoru thermostat (boil it to see when it opens) to see if its opening. If it is-considering the fan clutch is working- then i would check out teh hoses and radiator to see if there is any clogs in them at all and replace all the coolant with water. Run the car like that then flush it again and refill with water/coolant mix.

well I have no idea what your problems were before, or what the condition is now. But that is uaully how I woudl diagnose a overheating problem. it doesnt sound like you were driving very hard when it happened and the car is probably stock or close to it...

That hissing sound is the boiling water most likely and that is VERY bad. That means that air pockets can be creted making the whole situation harder to fix. Mayke sure that you diagnose everythign properly (you can even follow the FSM) and use the proper water/coolant mixture.

Try to see where the steam is shooting from, that's your leak. I wouldn't have the same guy do anything else on the car.

Either the leak caused the loss of coolant and thus caused the overheating; or the overheating caused boilover and the pressure caused the leak. Hard to say.

I had to go somewhere tonight so I had to drive the car as it's the only one I have, well, got to where I was going and sure enough water was leaking out and it was hissing so I popped the hood and saw where the steam was coming from....lol...this is going to be hard to describe as I hardly know anything about cars much less what anything is called but from where he replaced the thermo to the left of it up top, there is a gold colored metal thing..lol..sorry:)....steam was coming directly from it.....I noticed also there is like a valve thingy but no hose attached to it beside it, looks something like a stem of some sort...any clue here to what I'm saying? lol sorry guys...wish I could be more descriptive. Just really worrried, husband is in the air force...overseas, I know no one here and don't have a clue who to take it to or not enough to know if I'm getting ripped off like last time...any help would be appreciated. Mechanics on base take so long to be able to get to it and the only guy I know is the one who worked on it last time.

go in and check your water pump. If there is a crack, it will leak fluid slowly. maybe thats why it would overheat once in a while. Thats what happend to my old 92 celica

I cant do this but I know someone here can....

I think someone should post a pic of the manual, that has the thermo portion of the engine. Label the various parts with number and then we ask wife to say what number she is having a problem with. Might make it easier.

afwife= be very careful. Dont care about us guys very much, but would hate to hear a horror story of a lady who burned herself messing around in a motor. Steam burns are the worst kind, and that scar is not a nice one. Please b careful.

Before anyone does the pics; what is the year? We need to know which engine we are dealing with. Those minor differences will matter.

well, had guy come and look at the car...he flushed the radiator, replaced the water pump and the lower radiator/ thermo hose for me ( had crack in it)....now leaking from NEW aftermarket hose around where it clamps to thermo housing , thinks it may be replacement hose, have ordered Nissan one and will be here tommorow.....am having to drive to work and straight home with leaks...top her off everytime I get in it....well, was going to run up to the corner store but when I got in and cranked her up...loud tapping....have heard it off and on before but kept reading on here about noises at start up and just figured it was that..so decided to check my oil and there is sludge in it.....just had the oil changed a month ago and everything was fine or so I was told....any ideas what the noise and sludge are?? there's no white smoke anywhere..just tapping and the sludge...and oh that dang leak!Help?????

if coolant is getting into oil it may cause sludge, otherwise i dont know about that one. it is obviously leaking alot, it it leaking at the hose or the thermostat housing?

could you possibly snap a pic, that would help alot

I wish I could snap a pic but hubby took cam to Iraq with him....it's leaking a good deal and as far as I can tell it looks to be coming from the hose not the housing. The housing looks sealed really good. The aftermarket hose didn't fit quiet right and had a slight bend in it so he had said it might not "do right" ..so I ordered one from Nissan.....

i dont have any wires running across mine, do you have an alarm or anything, they probobly dont do anything really important.

the nissan hose should fix it, but you need to get a compression test done to see if your head gasket is blown
