My buddy recently got back from Japan. HE's had his truck for about 5 years, but it only has 45,000 miles on it. While in Japan I was talking to him about building him a turbo kit since I have built them for the 240's. I assumed that Nissan did away with the gutless SOHC motor in 90 when like the 240SX...wrong. He has the gutless SOHC. It seems he has the worst combo of both engines aswell. He gets the internally triggered coil on the dizzy like the 95 and later 240's but gets the SOHC like the 90's 240. What was Nissan thinking?

Anyway, I told him 350WHP was easily attainable for the DOHC motor, but his SOHC only puts out around 90WHO in stock trim. Which will require ALOT more boost then I originally anticipated.

To the point of the thread. He has the MSD 6 ignition, a pace setter header, full catback with flowmaster mufflers and some type of aftermarket intake.

The truck can barely get out of it's own way. He has a hard time going over 70mph in 5th gear. I looked for any noticeable vacuum leaks or sensor problems, I could find nothing that stould out. I swapped oit a IAT sensor sine his was semi messed up, no help there. I checked his timing, no help there. Although his dizzy is turned fully clockwise when sitting at the normal base timing mark. Which on the truck is a PITA to see.

Lets assume I'm being dumb for a second. With the TPS unplugged, the idle at 700-800, the timing mark I should use on the crank pulley is the one all the way to the right as I'm looking down from the front of the vehicle? Or is that all the way retarded? Also, I'm aligning it with the pin that icks out from the block.

Any tips/tricks to look for? Thanks in advance fella's.

First of all brian that truck is inherantly a total slug on the road. The speed limits and lack of horse power does not suprise me at all.

As far as timing goes it is the mark farthest to the passenger side of the vehicle thats top dead center. unless the second one is a differnet color then the rest of the marks in which case that is top dead center.

Hello guys,I have a question. If a guy was willing to change the intake manifold, could a DOHC head be installed on the SOHC block???I could understand timing chain differences, and make a couple of DOHC gears to change, but if you got a complete head and were willing to do the work, could it be done?I think it might, unless the head bolt arrangement on the block was differe nt. Anyway, I have the 98 Frontier with the KA24DE... Mine is a 4x4 so I'm looking primarly to help the torque.... I have found used/rebuilt altima ka24de heads on ebay for as little as $325, although I think the thermostat housing/intake are different for the altima head because its transverse vice the truck layout.

You can also find quite a bit a parts on ebay buy entering ka23de as a search term... pretty good prices, maybe a cheap turbo and exhaust manifold would allow you the chance to create something better (like I,m trying to do.

I'd rather do the full swap over to a DOHC motor. It's just a better design as a whole. Piston oil squiters, cam on bucket valvetrain and it responds to boost in a very good way. This is the option I think I'm going to push him towards.

For the head you'll need the harness from a DOHC vehicle as well. So best to find a donor car and swap all the parts.

You can not use the head from an alitima on a conventionally mounted engine setup due to the distributor, It hangs out the back of the head. The heads are cast completely different.

I own a hardbody as well as a 240sx and all I can say is to leave these damn trucks alone! I couldn't get mine past 95mph and never tried again. They're ment to go to Home Depot for potting soil.

yea and off road fun. They may be dead at high end, but they will practically leap out of trenches when off roading.

Well the new VQ's in the trucks have overcome this problem, my 05' X-Terra has tons of power and loves to cruise at 90.

What's wrong with this quote? A nissan fan knocking nissan? Even NISTECH? I love the hb's. And to a matter of fact, I can go well over 100mph. Yes, they are not a power house, but dont knock 'em. I have plenty of wins against other "cars" with my truck. A ford escort zx2 dohc, mazda miata, honda civic(s), and even a 240sx(early 90's). My motor is still Stock also. I dont think it's "fast and furious" and I know the limitations of what would be a fair race. The hell with potting soil. If it were in my truck, the dirt would be evertwhere!!! Ever heard of 600+rwhp in a D-21? Look around and you'll see 'em popping up. I think every nissan was built with performance in mind, even trucks! An SR will slide in fairly easy with few mods.

thats right meangreen. thanx for having faith in the hb. an sr in our trucks is way cooler than in a 240. Not knocking the 240,('cause I love ALL nissans), it's just different and unexpected to see.
