I have this stupid gunk on my gauges and I can't seem to get it off. Here are some pics:

These are the 2 worst areas. There are many more small areas as well.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Soap and water-nothing
Windex-nothing
Alcohol-nothing
Adhesive remover-nothing

The only thing that "worked" was a Mr. Clean magic eraser which had limited success. It got rid of some stuff, but appeared to have just spread it around to make the whole lense look kinda foggy.

Any suggestions?

Acetone should take it off but use it sparingly and clean the lens when you're done. You could try some Acetone nail polish remover first (that'll be the cheapest route) but if that isn't strong enough, you'll need the strong stuff from Home Depot / Lowe's.

Also, you can try
Go-Jo hand cleaner.
Baking Soda, an old toothbrush, and lots of elbow grease.
Industrial / Commercial strength 409

Which adhesive remover did you try? Goo-gone tends to work pretty well.

Good luck!

I used "OOPS!" I will try nail polish remover tomorrow since I have some of that the house. I also have go-jo so I'll try that too. If those don;t work I'll go out and buy some 409. Thanks for the suggestions!

Nail polish remover had no effect, but gojo got the gunk off. Unfortunately, it seems it was too abrasive and it also scratched the plastic lense. I'm going to order a new gauge cluster. I've seen them on ebay for $20-$40. Any idea if it will mess up my odometer readings?

the mileage will stay with the gauges. you swap it, you get the new mileage of the new set.

I'd just polish the plastic.

Or you can buy the new cluster and just change the plastic piece so you keep your original odometer. I would try Promise Land's advice first tho', there are special compounds make to revive plastic like new again - don't know any off-hand but google should help you there.

To Polish the Plastic:

Greg has used these products before. He said they are the best.
