Any ideas? I just removed the cover, and the guides have already been removed. Still get a clicking type noise though, sounds like if you were to put a few nuts and bolts in a coffee can and shake it around.

EDIT: Sound Video Added, doesn't sound as deep in person as in the video. More of a higher pitched clanking noise in person.

i see that the top one is gone, but what about the one behind the upper timing chain cover on the exhaust side? i can't really tell, but it kind of looks like it's still there.

Hmm i see, think you can post me a link to it? And here is a clip of it..but in person the clanky sound is more higher pitch sounding, not as deep as it is in the video.

It's most likely the upper timing chain tensioner. They operate from oil pressure and after years that get stuck (from the grime, etc). I had the same problem. After removing both guides I still had the noise; so I changed out the tensioner. It's about 35$ but well worth it.

Hmm i see, What kind of labor is included in swapping one of those out? My mechanic was telling me that I might as well get a whole timing kit just to get it over with.

it's really easy, just take off the upper timing chain cover and it's right there on the intake side. i would try to free it up with some wd-40 first. i was able to get a lot more movement out of mine when i did that.

I see, also umm, this is a 92 240, but the valve cover gasket i purchased did not fit..this motor has the 96+ style gasket..I guess the previous guy had swapped out..How can i find the exact year of the motor, and how would i know if the transmission is different? Because im going to need to buy a new clutch within the next few weeks or so, and need to know the exact year.

On my friends s14 we were sure it was just timing chain noise. We took the guide off and it didn't fixed it so we figured it was the other one and were going to do it another day. It kept getting worse and we discovered it was a rod knock. The ka is kinda famous for them. I would take your oil pan off and check at least.

Is it possible it could be the fan clutch?

Located? I was thinking of pulling the vin off my 240, then looking for the vin on the motor, and car faxing them both to see the results..but car-fax reports are like $30 a piece.
