Good pics but I have golden advice to go with this topic.

NEVER NEVER pull apart the photodiode..not to look , not for fun..nothing.You'll bugger it up , it will be out of alignment and you'll have to go find another one.

Also note that all of the CAS units I have, use 3 anti-tamper bolts from the back, unlike your example with phillips head ones.

I migged a couple of small nuts on the bearing retainer, and put some nice bolts through from the front, to make it easier to pull apart.

I can't believe that you guys are breaking these shafts. They must be fractured from someone else dropping them. If they are carefully inserted into the exhaust cam there's almost no way they can break.

Still it's a good doc. Cheers!

good info about the photo diode.

yeah you can use the write up email me [email protected]

I didnt break this one, this was a NEW nissan CAS. Buddy put it in his silvia and it snaped in 5 minutes. I have never had a CAS snap. It looks like his timing cover alignment pegs fell out of the timing cover and it was off and put presure on the shaft.

heh shaft.

these things

yep those dowels are critical (both of them) to keeping the CAS centered in the CAM. Im on my way to destroying a second exhaust cam as I have a stoopid a** modified timing cover with only one dowel in place.

That's awesome. Good writeup.

Now, isn't the difference between the RB CAS's and CA ones the number of slits in the interruptor disc? So would you not theoretically be able to replace the discs in the respective units if, say, you're having trouble finding a stock CA one?

Since our sensors are Mitsu units maybe we should look into figuring out what other (North American) cars they came on and whether or not it's possible to swap the discs in them. Could make replacing a broken CAS a helluva lot cheaper if we can find ample numbers of these at the junkyard.
