Is the turbo too big for the MAF? Yes and No! Keep it under 12psi and enjoy what you got, but if he really wants to take advantage of the upgrades, there must be a change. But for right now, I think that after not driving his car for a bunch of weeks, he'll be content for now until his funds get replinshed. Another tip for you younger guys and newbies that are using the stock system and are having cranking and driveability issues, the crank angle sensor can indeed fail without flashing a code through the ecu. Import and I found this out the hard way as his car cut-out after about a mile of abusive driving and we had to push it back to my house. I checked the computer and code 55 was displayed, but knowing that I set the timing belt correctly and had just adjusted his ignition timing before we started driving prompted me to immediately remove trhe crank angle sensor and replace with one of my own and away he went!
P.S. his car is currently running 18psi of boost. His boost controller's dip switches need to be adjusted to compensate for the external wastegate as opposed to the internal wastegate. And don't worry, he knows not to try and sustain W.O.T. with his car seeing that much boost; it will be fatal for his engine.
